JACK'S POINT SHOWHOME WINS AWARDS WITH ESPAN®

Based on a working farm a few minutes from Queenstown, Jack’s Point is renowned as one of the premier residential and golfing developments in Australasia.

Designed and developed over the past fifteen years by international planning practice Darby Partners Limited, it has been specifically formed to visually blend into the landscape using environmentally sensitive construction processes. Houses at Jack’s Point are expected to comply with 140 pages of design guidelines to ensure that they “tread lightly on the land, [with] no disturbance to its intrinsic values”.

One home that fits harmoniously with this admirable outlook is a property built by Stonewood Homes using Metalcraft’s ESPAN® product. It’s already an award-winner, picking up the 2016 Otago and Southland Registered Master Builders’ Association GIB Show Home Gold Award, as well as the overall category prize.

The home is around 240 sqm, with four bedrooms on the 826 sqm section. While it’s owned by private individuals, Stonewood Homes Queenstown Limited built it and they have a 12-month renewable option to use it as their show home within this development.

The structure consists of four separate pavilions with 25 degree pitched roofs of varying heights, linked by three flat membrane roofs above connecting corridors. While the section has long northsouth boundaries, the house itself is oriented east-west to maximise the impressive views. This orientation also allows for a large north-facing deck off the kitchen/dining and living pavilions, which are able to offer three aspects to ensure all-day light in every season. A sheltered east-facing courtyard, accessed from the kitchen/dining pavilion, opens to views of The Remarkables.

Stonewood Homes’ Queenstown architect Filiberto Rayon-Villela is a confirmed fan of Metalcraft’s ESPAN® using Colorsteel Endura®. “I like to play with materials,” he explained, pointing out that he used ESPAN® not only for roofing but also as a cladding material on the build, alongside cedar weatherboards. “The high ribs give strong shadow lines and its concealed fixings mean it copes well with the Otago weather,” he said.

The concealed fixings on ESPAN® not only deliver excellent weather performance but often eliminate the need for expensive substrates. Profiles simply lock onto the clips, which are fixed directly onto purlins at varying centres depending on thickness and wind loadings.

Like many visitors through the home, Filbert Rayon-Villela loves the sense of space it offers. “It delivers a series of individual, yet linked, spaces that connect with the outside and provide sheltered outdoor areas that can be enjoyed all year round.”

And that, surely, must be the aim of all great home designs.

Our story started over 40 years ago when New Zealand Steel began making COLORSTEEL® roof and wall cladding products from New Zealand iron sand. It was a world first, and a feat that required imagination, ingenuity and sheer determination.

These qualities have become COLORSTEEL® pillars - it’s who we are and how we work.

For New Zealand:
We’re inspired by the landscape around us. From snow topped mountains to tussock grasslands, you’ll see New Zealand reflected in everything we create.

COLORSTEEL® products also undergo intense, long-term colour performance and exposure testing. So you can be sure they’re made and trusted for our conditions. We’re so confident in the durability of our products, we back them with robust warranties.

For you:
We’ve developed COLORSTEEL® products to meet the needs of New Zealanders. Whether it’s roofing your dream home, building a fence or cladding a warehouse– there’s a COLORSTEEL® solution for your project.

By combining beauty, durability and flexibility, we believe COLORSTEEL® is about more than just a steel solution - it’s about turning metal into magic and transforming the everyday.

For the environment:
All COLORSTEEL® solutions carry the Environmental Choice NZ licence which means they can contribute to the achievement of maximum points in Homestar and Green Star materials credits with NZ Green Building Council.
