For some time, the Catholic Diocese of Dunedin has been looking at rationalizing some of it’s parishes in South Dunedin.

A decision was made to refurbish the historical St. Patrick’s Basilica building to house combined Parishes.  The project involved the restoration of the Category 2 Basilica together with a new addition on the south side of the Basilica.

The restoration included earthquake strengthening, re-roofing, insulating, new heating system and protection from water ingress.

Careful detailing around historical elements was essential as well as thoughtful selections of responsible materials.  The addition provides a new entry to the Basilica along with office space, kitchen facilities and a casual congregation space for up to 100 people, something the Church desperately needed to see the Basilica function into the future.

The new entry is a well-grounded, contemporary white box providing a restrained presence alongside the Basilica.  A landscaped courtyard links the existing and new buildings.  The new congregation space provides glimpses to all the Parish buildings.

For over 60 years, McCoy Wixon Architects have been designing stand-out architecture throughout the South Island of New Zealand. That experience has underlined a fact: that listening and fully understanding the client's needs determines a project's success.

McCoy Wixon Architects are known for designing exceptional residential homes, commercial buildings and educational facilities. We are a design-led practice. That means each project is conceptualised by working through a process, where design solutions address each point in the client’s brief. The result is structures that function beautifully, impact appropriately with their environment and – most importantly – fulfil (often exceed) the client’s expectations.
