Overlooking dramatic peaks and the Treble Cone ski field stands this unwavering family home. Set on a large rural property, the house emulates its natural surrounds in every detail.

Drawing inspiration from the irregularities of the alpine setting and forests that surround it, the six-bedroom house imitates nature from the exterior in its random placement of differing spaced and varied width vertical cedar cladding.

Like the trees beyond, the rhythms of nature are a focus throughout the home with interior cedar and schist highlights, irregular timber balustrades and mixed-width timber. A central feature is the main hallway connecting the master suite and communal living areas, which wraps around an internal courtyard, bringing the aesthetics of nature indoors. It's timber flooring combined with irregularly-spaced cedar walls and narrower cedar boards on the ceiling combine to create a unique natural feel.

This random natural rhythm flows throughout the home and is evident in almost every room. The kitchen cabinetry continues the theme with mismatched timber widths. Designed for a family with four children, the six-bedroom home was built to fit in with their active and outdoor lifestyle. Spread over three levels, the four children each have bedrooms on the lowest level along with a rumpus room and shared bathroom. The middle, ground level houses the internal garage, laundry, mud room, communal and formal living areas, kitchen and master suite, while upstairs a separate flat for visitors along with an office is located. Its aesthetics create open welcoming spaces while maintaining a rustic, earthen feel throughout.

About the

Excellence in architectural design to bring your vision to life.

Sorted Architecture is an award-winning architectural design practice based in Wānaka. Our work spans commercial, residential and renovation projects for clients around New Zealand.

Established in 1993, Sorted Architecture has been a fixture in the architectural landscape of the Southern Lakes for more than 30 years. A member of the Architectural Designers of New Zealand (ADNZ), our practice has won multiple regional and national awards, and our work has featured in many of New Zealand’s leading architectural publications.

Based in Wānaka, Central Otago, our practice has three decades of experience designing buildings for extreme environments. Initially designing homes in our hometown of Wānaka, our projects now span from the mountains to the coasts. Each design integrates innovation, sophistication and efficiency as a way to harmonise buildings with the natural environment.

Innovation and sophistication without extravagance

Our design ethos merges style, practicality and innovation to create buildings that reflect the individuality of owners and the natural landscape in which they sit. Guided by many years of experience working with the challenges and opportunities of extreme environments, we have created buildings to sit amongst mountains, lakes and beaches.

These impressive landscapes have inspired us to think beyond the ordinary to create homes of efficiency and comfort without forgoing design impact.
