The brief for this alteration was to extend an existing lodge dwelling to accommodate a large extended family as a holiday destination. The site, at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, falls steeply from west to east, down to a sheltered tidal bay. The new design ensured a seamless flow out of the house onto either a grass courtyard to the west or a living terrace facing the bay, maximising both views and sunlight. The large north east facing terrace created a new summer living room for the house which focuses on an infinity edge swimming pool, suspended 8.0 metres above the ground, thus hovering above the Bay below. The pool water blends with the sea water beyond. The materials used both inside and out are batten and board, with colours employed from a soft palette, reflecting a relaxing holiday environment.
