A New Approach to Benchtops Beyond Stone and Wood

When planning a new kitchen, one of the most important decisions is the benchtop. It’s the surface that will be used daily, the anchor for the entire design, and one of the details that makes the biggest impact in a space.
For years, stone and wood have been the go-to options in high-end New Zealand homes. Stone is admired for its durability and timeless appeal, while wood brings a natural warmth that feels inviting. But for those looking to move beyond the expected, new surfaces are opening up fresh possibilities for both aesthetics and performance.
The Rise of Innovative Surfaces
Two materials leading that shift are imi-Plus and silverTouch stainless steel. Both challenge the idea of what a benchtop can be, offering design freedom, and practicality that works in everyday kitchens.
imi Plus
imi Plus takes the raw beauty of poured concrete and makes it more versatile for kitchen use. Manufactured in Germany, it comes in four concrete variations to match the feel of the kitchen even better. Each variation offers its own character, from monocoloured anthracite or grey to a vintage finish on the grey or anthracite, while maintaining the concrete look, and the lightweight, and waterproof core that makes imi Plus ideal for both interiors and outdoor applications.

silverTouch Stainless Steel
silverTouch is a 5mm hot rolled stainless steel. It is hand finished with its distinctive orbital finish to create a soft, matte surface that is naturally fingerprint resistant, creating a surface that is both sophisticated and functional. This finely worked surface is more than just an aesthetic. Thanks to the chromium content in the steel, a natural oxide layer forms on the material, protecting it from wear, corrosion, and stains. Seamless sheets of up to six metres are available, making it an ideal choice for any sized kitchen.

For Kitchens that are Designed to Live In
Choosing the right benchtop for your kitchen is about more than just matching a colour scheme, it’s about finding a material that reflects the way a home is lived in. For some, that means the classic familiarity of stone or wood. For others, it means exploring materials that bring something extra, such as surfaces that combine character with cutting-edge performance.
With more options than ever before, today’s kitchens can be both practical and uniquely tailored to meet your wants and needs. And the best way to understand the difference these materials make? Experience them up close.
