Top-quality hardware manufacturer Blum has invested in a new exhibition space at the Wellington Design Library on Thorndon Quay. Larger than the previous display at the library’s old location, the new Blum space is conceived as a resource for architects and interior designers in the lower North Island to get ‘hands-on’ with Blum’s range of hardware.
It’s also a collaborative space where architects and designers can bring their clients to review the products and storage solutions and settle on the best options for their projects.
Blum Specification Consultant Kate Ward regularly visits Wellington as part of her role supporting the design sector. She shares her insights into the new Blum display at the Wellington Design Library.
Kate, what’s the thinking behind the new Blum space?
“It’s a purpose-designed space with Blum products set up in a range of ‘rooms’ so you can see how our quality products, such as MERIVOBOX and LEGRABOX drawers or AVENTOS lift systems look, feel and operate in situ. It’s tactile, so you can also feel the way motion technologies work and how they function.
“The other thing to keep in mind is that clever storage design isn’t just for the kitchen these days. We’ve included cabinet applications into our Wellington exhibition space to show how storage can be creatively integrated into the laundry, wardrobe and bathroom.
What are some of the featured products that excite you the most?
“Blum’s new box system MERIVOBOX has just launched in New Zealand, so we’ve incorporated it into the Wellington Design Library too. MERIVOBOX boasts straight lines and a striking look and is based on a platform concept, so you can create a broad range of drawers and pull-outs.
“SPACE STEP is another game-changer. It’s a pull-out step that provides easy, stable access to storage at head height or above as well as extra storage in a drawer within.
“Especially in Wellington, where there are so many renovations of character houses in unusual configurations, SPACE STEP facilitates a creative way to expand the design.”
What’s your advice to architects to get the most out of the Blum space?
“I understand architects are busy and can’t always get out of the office, but it really is worth taking an hour or so once a year to experience the latest Blum products in a realistic setting. Brochures, models, and websites are useful, but sometimes it helps to familiarise yourself with the real thing.
“You can bring your clients, too. Spread out your plans on a beautiful David Shaw table within the Blum space at the Wellington Design Library and discuss your options.
“I’m always happy to meet you there, so you can get all your questions answered on the spot and work out a precise specification for the cabinet maker.”
You’re based in Christchurch. How do you support the design sector in Wellington?
“I’m up in Wellington often, meeting with designers and architects. They can pick up the phone or drop me an email, and we can set up a time to go through the Blum display at the Wellington Design Library together.
“It’s a space to explore and ask questions. So even if I’m not there in person, you can call me any time with a question about Blum products and your next project.”
