Recessed curtain hardware is a great way to elevate and streamline your interiors. Here’s everything you need to know about how to integrate it into your space.
In the world of interior design, the choices you make for window treatments can significantly impact the overall look and feel of a space. Recessed curtain hardware is quickly becoming a popular and sleek solution for those seeking a minimalist aesthetic without compromising functionality. Its versatility allows it to be employed in various settings, from residential homes to commercial spaces and special-purpose areas like theatres. Its ability to seamlessly blend with different architectural styles and interior designs makes it a versatile choice for many applications.
To delve deeper into the world of recessed curtain hardware, we spoke to Vanda director Tim Wallace to provide you with a comprehensive guide on key considerations, advantages, functionality features, installation tips, and the latest technological advancements.
Key considerations when selecting recessed curtain hardware
The first and foremost consideration when opting for recessed curtain hardware is ensuring that there is sufficient space within the ceiling to accommodate the products. While retrofitting is possible, it adds complexity to the installation process. Ideally, these decisions should be made at the beginning of a project, during the design stage.
Collaborating with architects and builders is essential to seamlessly integrate recessed hardware into the overall vision for the space.
“The other consideration is what is the purpose of the product? Sun control, privacy, complete block out, thermal insulation or a combination of all these things,” says Wallace.
These considerations will help you understand which recessed products are suitable for each of your spaces.

Advantages of recessed window treatments
Recessed curtain hardware offers a myriad of advantages over traditional options. With the modern trend of open, expansive areas with large windows, recessed products allow for the integration of soft interior elements like curtains or roller blinds within the ceiling space. This not only provides privacy and sun control but also retains thermal qualities when needed.
“It’s a perfect solution for architects as it gives the client an opportunity to soften up a space, create privacy or sun control, retain thermal quality when it is required – particularly in winter when the sun is low in the sky – but also be able to have the product seamlessly disappear into the ceiling lining.”
Architects appreciate the versatility of recessed curtain hardware, as it complements contemporary design elements such as concrete floors and steel structures. The clean lines and unobtrusive nature of recessed tracks contribute to a modern and minimalist aesthetic, making them an ideal choice for a wide range of interior aesthetics.
“For curtains, we offer a manual track called Flush Fit and for a motorised option, we have the Forest FMS Plus. If they opt for roller blinds and there's ample space in the ceiling to accommodate them, we provide a comprehensive range of recessed Flushbox products.”
Functionality features & installation tips
Recessed curtain hardware comes with both manual and motorised options, offering flexibility to suit individual preferences. Proper installation is key to ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of the hardware. Wallace recommends a full timber nog for stability and accurate rebate cutouts for tracks. In coastal environments, periodic silicone application is advised to maintain the smooth operation of the tracks.
Motorised blinds and curtains are experiencing a surge in popularity, with various control options including hardwired motors, battery motors, and integration with home automation systems.
“There are a number of moving parts within a motorised track; there is a Kevlar belt, the curtain glides, bearings and bushes that move every time the curtain is operated so it is a good idea to top up the lubrication on these parts from time to time,” shares Wallace. “In the New Zealand environment, the tracks do regularly get specified up towards the limit of their capacity, so in order to make sure the products last we recommend a service plan.”
Timers can be incorporated for automated opening and closing, enhancing the user experience. The next wave of technological advancements involves connectivity and communication between motorised systems and other appliances within the home, providing users with even more control and options.
A double track is ideal for accommodating sheer and block out curtains.

Tailored solutions for every project
Every order for recessed products is custom-manufactured by Vanda based on specific requirements, allowing customers to tailor the hardware to their individual needs.
“Customers can colour match to powder coat colours, and we also offer bending solutions for our tracks.”
It is crucial to specify recessed products early in the construction process to accommodate them seamlessly within the project's requirements.
Budget-friendly options
For those working within a budget, recessed curtain hardware offers a range of options.
“When working within a budget, roller blinds are generally more cost-effective than curtains, particularly because the cost of drapes can significantly increase the overall expense of this window treatment, although this may not be the case for the hardware alone,” shares Wallace.
Vanda’s manual Flush Fit track provides a cost-effective solution similar to a decorative retrofitted curtain rod. On the higher end, motorised tracking systems offer a more luxurious experience. Similarly, for blinds, manual roller blinds and motorised options cater to different budget considerations. While roller blinds are generally more cost-effective than curtains, the overall expense can vary based on the specific window treatment and its associated hardware.
The selection of recessed curtain hardware goes beyond mere functionality – it is an integral part of the design process that can elevate the visual appeal and atmosphere of a space. By considering key factors, exploring technological advancements, and understanding the versatility of recessed products, you can make informed decisions that align with your design goals and budget.
