Installing a wood burner is more than simply placing an appliance in your home. From safety and Building Code compliance to flue design and long-term performance, there are many factors that determine whether a fireplace installation will be successful. This article explains what's involved, when professional expertise is essential, and how to avoid costly mistakes.

Can You Install a Wood Burner Yourself?

Yes — but with caveats: There are a number of rules that must be met, only a certified, qualified professional can sign off wood burners as they will understand the rules, safety, emissions, and consent requirements that must be met. DIY risks:

  • No Code Compliance Certificate (CCC)/PS3
  • Insurance being void if a fire occurs
  • Installing an appliance that is not approved for use in New Zealand
  • Costly fixes if the job isn’t compliant

Can a Builder Do It?

Builders may do much of the preparatory work, build the cavity to house the fire and the hearth, cut roof penetrations, and set up the space, they then leave the installation to a certified installer. If your builder wants to install the entire fire and connect the flue, check they are also a certified installer. Only a certified solid fuel appliance installer can sign off on a wood fire installation.

Who Can Install a Wood Burner?

Only:

  • Registered solid fuel appliance installers, or
  • Certified plumbers/gasfitters trained in solid fuel systems

They’ll also handle council paperwork, inspections, and provide the compliance certificates you need.

Key NZ Rules to Know

  • Building consent is usually required
  • In clean-air zones, only approved low-emission models are allowed
  • Clearances and flue installation must follow strict safety standards
  • A CCC/PS3 is needed for insurance and resale purposes

Cost of Installation

Expect $2,500–$5,000 for professional installation (plus the cost of the appliance). While DIY may seem cheaper, using a certified installer protects your safety, insurance, and compliance.
