Incorporating patterns and texture into your home can be one of the scariest elements of decorating, but is actually one of the most important.  Every room needs it and it is the key ingredient to creating a warm, comfortable and interesting home.

Using texture and pattern can create visual stimulation in a neutral and subtle space, but can also have a calming influence in a more colourful, livelier environment.

You can keep things subtle by using neutral tones with layers of different textures.  However, if you are wanting to spice things up a bit you can go with mixing colours and patterns.

Here are a few ways you can incorporate texture & pattern

Accessories

‘No rules’ is a good rule to follow when layering with accessories! You can have fun by grouping textures together and combining a variety of finishes.

Think about using glass bottles with mirrors and metals, or natural textures such as sticks, shells and woven trays.  Add beautiful scatter cushions with textured fabric or patterns, and mix with knitted, silk or chenille throw blankets.

Plants are always a winner to add natural texture, with the extra benefits of improving your mood! Win win!

Accessories are easy to change, so when you are wanting a different feel to your space just have fun and mix it up again!

Patterns, textures and bold colour work harmoniously

Rugs and soft furnishings

Rugs and soft furnishing are a great way to add texture.

You can opt for a natural robust sisal or beautiful soft wool rug.  Or for something a little different maybe an animal hide or a bold pattern.  Rugs ground a room and will also zone areas.

Patterned and textured fabrics can be mixed and matched on your sofa, occassional chairs, ottomans and cushions. Pair these with light or dark timbers to create an interesting and relaxing feel.

Walls

An easy option for giving your wall a textural lift would be to add wallpaper. There are many patterns and textures available on the market to choose from.  You could opt for a tone on tone flocked pattern for soft elegance, or for a more natural feel you could choose something like grasscloth or bamboo.

A fireplace with beautiful soft coloured sandstone, blended with light coloured timbers will add natural warmth and texture to any living area.

Using textures and patterns around your home doesn’t have to cost any more money.  It just takes you to open your eyes to what you are looking for and it can be acquired from just about anywhere.

Have fun letting opposites attract, combining different patterns and textures until your space feels exactly how you want it to.
