The powder room is increasingly being deemed the ‘jewel box of the house’, presenting an opportunity to experiment with patterns, colours, tones, and textures.

Formerly a solely functional space reserved for guests conducting brief ablutions, the powder room has slowly but surely become a mechanism for interior designers and homeowners alike to make bold aesthetic choices and take a design risk or two.

The powder room is increasingly being deemed the ‘jewel box of the house’, with its typically compact proportions and cordoned-off nature presenting an opportunity to incorporate patterns, colours, tones, and textures you may be reluctant to take in other areas of the home. Unlike the bathroom, which doubles as a place for relaxation and respite, the powder room’s limited purpose means loud and daring design choices can be made, with carefully selected elements transforming the once utilitarian space into a conversation starter.

One of the most exciting rooms in the home to decorate, these are our favourite impactful powder rooms.

The understated blush walls allow the pink-veined stone of the vanity to shine in this Bondi home. A patinated brushed brass tap and statement-making pendant lighting complete this magazine-worthy powder room.

Purple is a hue not often seen in bathrooms or powder rooms. Yasmine Ghoniem of YSG Studio executes the striking colour choice in tonal, vintage-style square tiles that give the space a lived-in look. A traditional vanity is forgone in favour of a purple-veined sink top, complemented by understated matte white tapware.

Moody and zen is the name of the game in the powder room of this home in Vaucluse. Textured dark grey walls meet minimal, almost painting-like decor and a statement painting to create an ageless space.

Tapping into the soothing benefits of biophilic design, this home makes use of its tranquil landscape, with the powder room reflecting the calming tones of the outdoors. Cool pale green tiles are complemented by wooden cabinetry, creating a peaceful corner in the home.

While tame at first glance, the intrigue in this powder room comes courtesy of the sculptural vanity that reflects the commitment of the home to harmoniously merge old and new. Statement cylindrical wall sconces add interest to this neutral space, while matte black hardware and tapware prevent it from being too traditional.

While technically a bathroom, this space showcases the statement-making prowess of a graphic wallpaper. A veiled marble sink, colourful cabinetry, and gold hardware and tapware tie the look together.
