Making decisions about the best fences and screening designs for your garden can be challenging. There is just so many to choose from, ranging from sturdy panels to traditional trellising, from square boards to lattice… just where do you start?

Let’s explore various designs to suit your home.

  1. Think about what it is you are aiming for: are you looking to define your garden’s boundaries or hide an eyesore? Zone certain areas to lend new dimensions to your outdoor space or simply trying to make existing borders look more decorative?
  2. Decide on the style that suits your purpose. Fencing is available in two ways: you can either have designs built to specific dimensions or buy ready-made panels in standard sizes. Whichever option you choose, there are plenty of styles on offer, but which is best for you should be determined by purpose and property type.

Here are some useful tips for you:

  • To mark garden boundaries, solid timber fencing – such as timber palings or cement sheeting – is best.
  • Traditional square or lattice trellising is good choice for zoning. These are also great for growing climbing plants to create living walls.
  • Use pretty picket-style fencing to provide a barrier without cutting off your garden from the outside world. The lack of height invites interaction, while the gaps between panels give a glimpse of the garden beyond.
  • Consider metal panels for industrial look. It works well with period properties and adds an edge to a garden of pretty meadow flowers and luscious greens.
  • Keep it classic with wrought iron railings to create a boundary that looks imposing from a security point of view, without blocking the view of your home.
  • Build a living retaining wall made from vertical timber sleepers to form a raised bed of sorts that can be planted with tall grasses for height, or low herbs and shrubs.
