Sing it from the rooftops (or the floating deck)

Modas non-penetrative decking system ideal over waterproof membranes.

Turns out, per capita, no other country loves a good deck as much as Kiwis love a good deck—or hanging out and socialising on one.

Historically though, a portion of the population has had to look on with envy as their peers enjoyed deck privileges they themselves were denied. All that has changed, thanks in part to the Modas deck framing system.

“Modas has been specifically designed as a floating deck system that doesn’t penetrate the substrate it sits on top of, making it ideal for areas such as apartment balconies and for rooftop applications,” says Joe Lagan, Product Specialist for Timberline, part of Buildpro Group.

“Modas is also ideal for low-height situations as it has a minimum clearance from substrate to decking surface of less than 80mm.”

Component-based system: the sum of its parts

Buildpro Group partnered with a manufacturer in Malaysia to design the system to New Zealand specifications and for use with the CodeMark-certified ModWood WPC decking solution, as well as hardwood timbers.

“The elegant simplicity of Modas is that it is a component-based system comprising individual base jacks that are connected together via an aluminium frame, on top of which sits the decking material, which is fixed in place with a clever hidden fixing system,” says Joe.

“Base jacks and framing are locked together using weather-proof, UV resistant clips, minimising the need for screw fixings. Additionally, each of the base jacks can be individually adjusted to counter a 5-degree slope and for steeper grades, an additional slope adjustment product can be specified.”

Designed with installers in mind

Due to the innovative nature of the system, Modas is incredibly quick and easy to install, helping reduce onsite build time.

“Each Modas system is delivered to site with all components needed and detailed CAD drawings and instructions for builders to reference,” says Joe. “Additionally, competent DIY-ers can find a series of educational videos online that will step them through the installation process.”

Also, when using ModWood composite decking, the whole system is lightweight and easy to handle, also assisting with installation, while the aluminium framing means extra strength, increased stability and better durability when compared to traditional timber framing options, adds Joe.

Partnering for a greener world

Modas base jacks are made from recycled plastics and, when used in conjunction with our exclusively distributed ModWood decking solution, support green building certification, says Joe.

“ModWood Decking is manufactured from 90 per cent recycled/reclaimed products. Each linear meter of ModWood contains approximately 37 recycled plastic milk containers and 2kgs of reclaimed radiata pine wood waste, making the two products ideal partners for building with sustainability in mind.”
