As homes continue to take on a more expansive role in daily life, comfort is being reconsidered. No longer defined by softness alone, it is increasingly expected to support the way people live, recover and restore themselves.

The Stressless® Adam reflects this shift. Designed in Norway and recognised with a Red Dot Design Award, the recliner brings together Scandinavian design principles, ergonomic thinking and a more restorative approach to everyday furniture.

At the centre of the design is its zero gravity position, which gently reclines the body to help reduce pressure on the spine and joints. The result is a posture intended to encourage circulation, ease muscular tension and support deeper relaxation, whether after exercise, a long working day, or simply as part of a slower evening ritual.

“Many people are looking for a real escape from the stress of everyday life. This chair is designed for recovery and deep relaxation, whether after a workout or when you simply need to rest and recharge,” says Henrik Birkelund, Director of Global Product Development at Stressless®.

This sense of ease is matched by a refined design language. Sculptural lines, soft cushioning and considered proportions allow Stressless Adam to sit comfortably within a range of interiors, from pared-back living spaces to more layered, tactile environments. Its form is quiet but purposeful, balancing visual restraint with an inviting sense of comfort.

The recliner also includes a series of intuitive ergonomic features, including ComfortZones™ in the seat and back, automatic adjustment of head and lumbar support, a height-adjustable headrest cushion, an integrated footrest and 360-degree swivel. Together, these details allow the chair to respond to the body, rather than asking the body to adjust to it.

For architects and interior designers, the piece speaks to a broader movement towards human-centred interiors. Spaces that consider not only how a room looks, but how it feels to live in over time. In this context, furniture becomes part of the architecture of wellbeing.

With more than 50 years of Norwegian craftsmanship behind the brand, Stressless continues to explore the relationship between movement, materiality and rest. The Adam recliner brings that philosophy into sharp focus: a design-led piece for homes where comfort is not an afterthought, but an essential part of how the space performs.
