Protect your property with a security gate or door system that makes your life easier.

Automatic security gates and doors are an increasingly popular choice for property owners due to the peace of mind and protection they provide. And — with features like intercoms, app-based controls, and solar power compatibility now available — it’s easy to see why.

As the leading trade suppliers of gate automation and perimeter security systems in New Zealand, AERO NZ are the experts on security gate automation — providing advice and technical support to businesses across the country. ArchiPro spoke with Stuart Rutley, AERO NZ National Operations Manager, to learn which security gate and door features are the most important for Kiwi property owners.

“Smart features like Simply Connect and G-ULTRA are so valuable to property owners because they offer the freedom to control the gate remotely, the ability to share access with regular visitors, and additional information for technicians solving any service-related issues."
“Solar compatibility is a great addition to your security gate system — especially if you’re running solely on battery power. When the sun is shining your battery can charge safely with ultra-low voltage power, ensuring you’ll always have a functioning gate.”

What makes a great security gate system?

Choosing an automatic security gate system for your property can be a daunting task. Not only do you need to consider day-to-day tenant and traffic movements, you also need to ensure easy access for visitors, contractors, and after-hours staff without compromising security. Fortunately, experts like Stuart and the AERO NZ team are well-versed in the needs of New Zealand properties.

“There are a few important features you need in an automatic security gate system,” Stuart says. “Safety beam sensors and obstacle detection; battery operation for when the power is off; a gate that opens quickly to avoid traffic buildup and obstruction to public roads; app-based controls so you don’t need to carry a remote; a reliable product with locally sourced spare parts — these are all crucial features to ensure your site operations run smoothly.”

App-based controls like Simply Connect from FAAC or G-ULTRA by Centurion are particularly helpful as they allow you to open and close the gate without a remote, check whether the gate or door has been closed when you’re off-site, and monitor the movements of the gate throughout the day.

“App-controlled gates are also valuable for homeowners,” Stuart explains. “Most people install security gates at home to keep their kids and pets safe, or deter unwanted visitors, so the ability to open, close, and check the status of the gate from your phone offers real peace of mind.”

In his experience, Stuart has found that many property owners know they want an automatic gate, but forget that once the gate is shut their visitors will have no way to announce their arrival.

“The trusty doorbell is no longer accessible, so adding an intercom to your gate means visitors can communicate with you easily — ideal for random visits from courier drivers and tradespeople. Keypads are also a great addition for frequent trusted visitors, staff, or B & B guests.”

Intercoms, like the G-SPEAK ULTRA, can be integrated into your app-based control system allowing you to speak with visitors and remotely open and close the gate.

“Smart features like Simply Connect and G-ULTRA are so valuable to property owners because they offer the freedom to control the gate remotely, the ability to share access with regular visitors, and additional information for technicians solving any service-related issues,” Stuart says.

Another important consideration for automatic security gates is battery-powered operation. Trenching mains power can be more expensive than the gate motors themselves, so for those without mains power access already, solar power is the best bet. Plus, in the event of a power outage, people will still need to open and close the gate; with battery power, your gate or door can continue to function normally.

“Solar compatibility is a great addition to your security gate system — especially if you’re running solely on battery power. When the sun is shining your battery can charge safely with ultra-low voltage power, ensuring you’ll always have a functioning gate.”
