The suspended fire

Creating a true design statement with fire has just reached another level with the introduction of the suspended fire in New Zealand. We spoke to Naked Flame about the striking beauty of the hanging fireplace.

Fireplaces, while varied in form and size, have traditionally been relatively similar in terms of function and design options. Traditional wood and gas fires all require chimneys and flues to operate safely, along with consent from local authorities to install. They’ve also always been either freestanding, wall mounted or inbuilt. 

Enter the suspended fireplace. A dramatic shift away from our traditional notion of the fireplace. “These suspended fires make a dramatic visual statement,” Naked Flame’s Richard Lee says. 

“We designed these to offer something new to the market; to offer a visually stunning, sculptural option that retains the traditional charm of a fireplace.”

The suspended fire range incorporates five models, each of which are available in four fuel options: biofuel, gas, LPG or wood.

Naked Flame’s range of suspended fires are attached to the ceiling, and do not penetrate the roof lining - if biofuel is chosen. Biofuel fires can be installed by a suitably qualified tradesperson or builder, and do not require council consent to install, Richard says. However, if wood or gas is chosen, the requirements around installation should be discussed with the local consent authority.

“Suspended fires hang from the ceiling, maximising on space and creating a very unique design element, while also providing beautiful warmth. Our range has been designed in-house, and each fireplace is handcrafted right here in New Zealand.

“As well as our biofuel option, we’ve decided to offer our suspended range with various fuel options so clients can select the best option for their project every time. However, the wood option can only be installed in certain parts of the country on properties of a minimum size due to council regulations.”

Suspended fires represent the latest in design innovation, offering a dramatic sculptural feature for any setting. “The freedom of design suspended fires offer is unparalleled. Because they are fixed to the ceiling rather than the floor, the options are endless in terms of configuration. In smaller spaces, the suspended fireplace is a fantastic option as floorspace can be retained with still enjoying the beauty and natural ambience of a real flame and warmth in the room.”

Made with 4mm cold rolled mild steel and coated in heat-resistant paint, the striking finish combines with their ability to rotate 360 degrees so the flames can be enjoyed from anywhere in the room.

The Naked Flame suspended fire range was launched last month, and is set to completely shift our traditional notion of the fireplace.
