As wellness continues to shape how we live, more homeowners are rethinking the role of their houses, not just as places to sleep, but as sanctuaries for health, recovery, and selfcare.

On New Zealand’s coastline, one homeowner Tinelle has taken this vision to the next level, transforming part of her property into a boutique wellness destination that combines a recovery room with a highly curated home gym. The result is a private retreat where design, functionality and daily rituals come together.

The Vision | A Space That Didn’t Exist Locally

“I created it because I couldn’t find it,” Tinelle Langdon says. “I’ve always appreciated beautiful environments that support your wellbeing. I used to drive to Auckland for contrast therapy because nothing like that existed where we live. I wanted to bring that experience home.”

Rather than building a large, commercial style gym, she focused on intimacy, calm, and quality. The space blends recovery (cold plunge, sauna) with strength and cardio training, offering a complete wellness experience just steps from the house.

Design That Inspires Wellness

The design process began with practicality, repurposing a studio and garage on the property, but ended with a strikingly unique result. Polished concrete floors create an industrial base, softened with natural textures and hand picked Balinese details.

“We shipped light fittings and furniture from Indonesia, so no one else in New Zealand has them. That was really important to me, creating a space that feels truly unique.”

The result is a home gym and recovery zone that looks as good as it feels, seamlessly merging design aesthetics with health focused function.

A Bespoke Approach to Fitness at Home

Unlike a busy commercial gym, this home wellness space is designed to remain small and personal. “It’s technically an open gym, but I limit numbers to keep it bespoke and calm. For me, that was essential in maintaining a sense of quality over quantity.”

This same principle applies to equipment selection. Every piece of Technogym equipment was chosen to balance performance with aesthetics, ensuring the space feels like part of the home rather than an afterthought.

The Role of Technology

Smart equipment plays a big part in making a home gym feel professional. “The Technogym Visio has been such a surprise, people can feel a little intimidated at first, but once they try it, they love it. It’s converted so many to regular training. And with the Technogym Visio, the digital tracking and ability to plan workouts from home has really elevated the experience.”

Home as a Wellness Retreat

As more homeowners look to create their own sanctuaries, this project demonstrates what’s possible: a wellness space that’s both luxurious and deeply personal. “If I hadn’t built it, someone else would have. I wanted something unique, something that reflects who I am and how I want to live. Now it’s all right here at home.”

A well designed home gym is no longer just about equipment, it’s about creating a space that inspires, restores and integrates seamlessly with your lifestyle.
