Thoughtful architecture in a fun and sunny holiday home that's all about creating memories and enjoying life.
The four-bedroom three-bathroom holiday home by Kate Rogan and Eva Nash of Rogan Nash Architects. “We wanted to make sure it really opened up and was welcoming to the beach and any passers by,” says Kate, “and you could walk from the house to the beach and back again.”
In the kitchen, Caravaggio pendants and Hay dining chairs and bar stools are from Cult.
“There's quite a beautiful detail under the island bench where it has a folded origami base. We were really pleased with how they turned out. It has a little bit of crispness and a little bit of elegance to it but without being too full on,” says Kate.
The client’s favourite colours are red and orange, says Eva. “So we wanted to bring that into the house and have it be a place they really treasured.” The outdoor furniture is from Jardin.
Slatted balustrades were chosen instead of glass. “It just has a nice vertical play,” says Eva. Adds Kate: “When you have glass by the ocean, you get sea salt on it the entire time and you’re constantly trying to clean it.”
Eva and Kate say they utilised eaves and and overhangs to ensure that spaces don't overheat.
The client brief was to have the master bedroom upstairs so they could get the best view of the beach.
A lot of thought went into the spatial planning. “When you arrive, and you’ve just done the big drive, there’s a bathroom right there, there’s a place to lock up the boat, and there’s a place to put down the shopping,” says Kate.
The house is cedar and aluminium, chosen to withstand the coastal environment. “When we were thinking about material palettes it really does speak to the New Zealand vernacular: those greys, those lighter colours, and the backdrop of bush,” says Kate.
Kate says it’s important a house doesn’t look brand new and out of place. “We don't want a house to look like it's just arrived. In this case, it's kind of dipped in the sand, it's dipped in those grasses on the beach.”
