Maintaining a frameless glass pool fence is crucial to ensure both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. While frameless glass fences are a popular choice for their sleek, modern look, they do require some attention to keep them in top condition. The most common issues that pool owners face include stubborn water spots left by hard water and gate-related problems, such as gates dropping due to movement in timber decks or latches failing to catch properly over time. To help you navigate these challenges, we spoke with expert Sam Morgan from NZ Frameless Glass, who offers professional advice on how to maintain your glass pool fence effectively.
One of the key aspects of maintenance is cleaning. To keep your frameless glass fence sparkling, it’s recommended to clean it every 2-4 weeks, or more frequently if there’s heavy use or exposure to saltwater.
“We recommend using a squeegee with a mixture of dish soap and warm water. After cleaning, wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth to avoid streaks,” shares Sam. “For tougher spots, a mixture of vinegar and water can help.”
Squeegees are the ideal cloth to remove excess water, while avoiding streaks after cleaning, and a microfibre cloth the perfect soft, non-abrasive option for wiping down glass after cleaning.
In addition, you can use a glass cleaner, if you prefer, shares Sam.
“Hi-Sheen is a great glass cleaning product for tougher areas, and it can be purchased from most online glass supply companies.”
Weather conditions can significantly affect the longevity and appearance of your frameless glass pool fence. While rain can be helpful in washing off dirt and debris, it often leaves behind water spots, particularly if the water is hard. This is especially common in areas where rainwater has a high mineral content. Additionally, for pool owners in coastal regions, saltwater exposure can cause salt deposits to accumulate on the glass. Over time, these deposits can cause cloudiness or damage if not regularly cleaned. Fortunately, sun exposure has minimal impact on the glass, meaning that UV rays won’t affect its clarity or cause deterioration.
To prevent water spots or mineral deposits from building up on your glass, it's essential to adopt a few simple habits.
“First, rinse the glass with fresh water after pool use to remove chlorine or saltwater residue, which can contribute to mineral buildup,” shares Sam. “Next, use a squeegee to immediately remove excess water after rinsing; this helps prevent water spots from forming as the glass dries. Finally, frequent cleaning is key to keeping your glass fence in top condition and ensuring it remains clear of stubborn deposits.”
By incorporating these steps into your maintenance routine, you can significantly extend the life and appearance of your frameless glass pool fence.
Depending on the type of material used in your frameless glass fence hardware, you can expect different levels of degradation over time, says Sam.
“Since our hardware is made from stainless steel, corrosion isn’t an issue, but it’s still important to check for signs of wear or loosening.”
Whatever the hardware is made from, regularly lubricating the hinges with a non-corrosive lubricant will ensure smooth operation and can improve its longevity.
If your gate has dropped it can affect gate alignment and function and can be a sign that the timber deck has shifted, so it also pays to check this when you attend to your hardware.
If this is the case, or your gate latch isn’t functioning properly it’s time to have it adjusted or repaired by a professional.
When it comes to maintaining your frameless glass pool fence, it’s important to address any damage promptly to preserve its appearance and safety. Minor scratches can usually be polished out, and for this, it’s best to contact the installing company for professional assistance. However, if you notice larger chips or cracks in the glass, it's crucial to reach out to a glass installer or professional. They can either repair the damage or replace the glass panel entirely, ensuring your fence remains in optimal condition and fully functional.
