Use the Dulux Paint Take-Back Service to recycle, reuse, or dispose of unused paint wisely.
At DuluxGroup, sustainable practices are at the heart of our business. Our Paint Take-Back service was established in 2009 and is a service we are proud to offer as part of our commitment to the environment.
Water-based paints may be donated to community groups for uses such as graffiti abatement. Accepted solvent-based paints are sent for solvent recovery or responsible disposal and packaging is then recycled.
While most water-based and solvent-based paints are accepted through this service, there are some exceptions. View our Eligible Paint Criteria below.
Eligible Paints in original Dulux, British Paints, Berger, Cabot’s, Intergrain or Feast Watson packaging can be returned free of charge. A $0.25 per packaging litre return and collection fee is applied on non-Dulux group branded paints.
Why return used paint packaging to Paint Take-Back?
100% recyclable in NZ: Our 10L and 15L plastic pails are 100% recyclable in New Zealand by our packaging partner.
Approximately 1.6 million (DuluxGroup 3R Compliance Report for activity up to Dec 2022): Plastic and steel paint packaging units have been recycled through the Paint Take-Back Programme since it started.
Returning recyclable pails: As more recyclable pails get returned to us, the more we can ramp up the recycled content in our packaging.
Another life: When you return your plastic pails through our Paint Take-Back collection points, you're ensuring that these containers get another life.
Our goal: With your help, we can reach our goal of incorporating at least 50% post-consumer recycled content in all our pails by the end of 2025.

Eligible Paint
We Do Accept
- Architectural/decorative paint coatings, in plastic or metal packaging
- Water-based paints, all brands, must be in original labelled/printed packaging
- Solvent-based paints, all brands, must be in original labelled/printed packaging
- All empty Dulux tinter cans
- Rusty metal containers containing paint are acceptable, provided that it is in original packaging and label/ printing is legible and they are not leaking
- If you have more than 20 packaging units we offer a pick-up service (for a small fee
We Do Not Accept
- Protective coatings, two-pack paints and hardeners and any other industrial paint coatings
- Two-pack Polyurethanes
- Marine paints and anti-fouling
- Textured coatings apart from high-build topcoats
- Thinners or solvents e.g., turps, meths etc
- Wallpapering materials including glues, adhesives and pastes
- Tiling materials including glues, pastes, grouting, adhesives etc.
- Any paint not in original labelled packaging (i.e., no paint in glass jars, no paint in non-paint cans etc)
- Aerosol/spray cans
- Plastering products e.g., compounds, adhesives and sealants
- Road coatings, flint coatings
