It’s well known that Women have been underrepresented in the construction industry for a very long time, however it is pleasing to see the wheels are turning for change albeit slowly.

There are many initiatives in play to improve this representation. The Victorian Government has created the Building Industry Consultative Council (BICC) to implement the Building Gender Equality: Victoria’s Women in Construction Strategy 2019-2022, (https://www.vic.gov.au/victorias-women-construction-strategy#message-from-the-minister). Alongside this strategy there are initiatives like Acceleration for Enterprising Women (https://enterprising-women.com.au/women-in-construction-week-2022) , The National Association of Women In Construction (https://www.nawic.com.au ), The AWIC - Awesome Women In Construction (https://awic.org.au). There is also a week every year which is dedicated to this very cause. The week highlights and celebrates the work of women in the industry. Many private companies are contributing in their own way too, all with the same goals in mind.

By not employing women in the construction industry we are not tapping into one half of the population. Women only make up 12% of the construction workforce. The thing is, women want to work in construction, they are keen to learn, to develop new skills, to help create a gender diverse business – everyone wins when there are more women on the team. Research by McKinsey and Company shows that gender diverse companies come out in front, time and time again. At MQS we are really motivated to help change the industry to a more inclusive one. It may just be a drop in a very big ocean, but every little bit helps and that keeps us focused. We are proud to currently be a predominantly women employee, including two female Quantity Surveyors representing our business. Our Director Nathan is supporting this initiative and encouraging growth, confidence and hoping to inspire the next generation to get involved. Our future recruitment will continue to be broad and inclusive of both female and male candidates as we also strive for gender equality. Everyone benefits from this approach.

MQS encourage new and innovative ideas, professional development, community involvement and climate conscientiousness. We are proud of who we are and how we are evolving. We have a wealth of knowledge of the construction industry that belies our years. If you are looking to start your next construction project and need some advice and guidance don’t hesitate to give us a call.
