The beautiful deep red-brown colouring of Kwila is often the first thing that people notice about this timber, followed closely by its durability and its recognition as one of the strongest hardwoods available.

For some time now, Kwila composites have been used for decorative outdoor use as a way to retain a consistent aesthetic in an overall landscaping scheme where Kwila decking makes up a central part. However, composite materials have drawbacks – and those are what inspired BBI Wood Products to introduce 100 percent FSC-certified solid Kwila posts and beams to the Kiwi market.

“Our 100 percent FSC-certified solid Kwila posts and beams are suitable for a range of exterior applications, but are especially popular for handrails, verandahs, poolside requirements, fencing solutions and pergolas,” BBI Wood Products’ Martin Wallace says.

“There are a lot of other products available at the moment for these sorts of applications, but they are predominantly glu-laminated timber, which have seams and joints and don’t have that lovely look of solid timber.”

The benefit of the solid posts and beams is their lack of noticeable joints and seams, as well as its inherent strength and longevity. “When you’re looking to create a seamless aesthetic between Kwila decking and other landscaping elements, using solid timber makes a real difference,” Martin says.

“People love Kwila because they know it is a very stable wood that will hold its shape over time and it also retains its beautiful deep colouring for much longer than other timbers, either with or without oils and stains. The introduction of the posts and beams in solid Kwila really allows for an extension of the capabilities of what can be achieved in this product that New Zealanders have developed a love for.”
