From the ground up: A ‘build your own’ shower enclosure system

What if choosing a new shower could be a stress-free experience, without the worry of selecting the wrong one?

Words by ArchiPro Editorial Team

Instead of searching high and low for the correct components for your bathroom, or using a ready-made shower that might not suit your exact needs, a ‘build your own shower enclosure’ could be the answer.

Henry Brooks Bathrooms has been delivering innovative solutions to the New Zealand market for decades, including the country’s first shower doors in the early 1970s. The family-owned business has been delivering quality bathroom components since then, and now its ‘build a shower’ concept is making it easier to choose the right shower enclosure for your bathroom.

We asked the Henry Brooks Bathrooms team about this system, how it works, and why it is a smart choice…

ArchiPro: What are the options to choose from?

Henry Brooks Bathrooms: There are basically only three shower styles to choose from – square, rectangular, or curved. But added to that, there’s over 40 shower tray options and with each tray you can have different waste and upstand configurations. So you end up with hundreds of possible combinations.

Choosing a shower style – square, rectangular or curved – is the starting point for Henry Brooks Bathrooms' 'build your own shower' product.

AP: What is the process of choosing the components and building a shower?

HBB: What we’re trying to do here is break down the shower into all of the components that make up the shower. First, you need to look at what sort of space you have. You then pick the shower tray size to suit your space – that’s the restraining piece of the puzzle. You pick the size and then build your shower up from there.

Depending on the space you have, our system will offer you various options of shower trays, wall linings, and door styles. In our Auckland warehouse, we hold stock of shower trays, we make custom shower liners, and we hold stock of shower doors – so we can mix and match to suit our customers’ individual requirements.

Once you’ve made your selection, you can choose your preferred shipping option and proceed to checkout. We ship all over New Zealand and the website handles the freight costs.

AP: What are the benefits of the ‘build your own shower enclosure’?

HBB: By utilising a staged approach to the selection process, we trim down options along the journey so that the clutter often associated with multiple choices is reduced.

For example, if you firstly choose a curved shower tray, you will only then be offered curved shower doors, and only wall linings that suit the curved shower tray sizes – there’s no confusion or worry of choosing the wrong item. While building your shower on the website, you’re only given the options that suit what you need. If further information on any component is required, it’s available at the bottom of each page.

AP: Is this option right for every home?

HBB: Henry Brooks showers are suited to most spaces. We have specific designs that suit a wide range of requirements. For example, if you’re renovating your bathroom, we have a shower tray which actually has four lips on it and which features a waste in the corner so you can turn that tray around 360 degrees to suit most existing plumbing situations.

Particularly if you’ve got a concrete floor, you can just select the shower tray that suits the waste you’ve already got and build the shower up from there.

We also have tileable shower trays, so if that’s what you want, we can supply those options as well.

Henry Brooks Bathrooms' shower trays are tested to withstand a 300kg weight on a cycle test of 10,000 impressions.

AP: How long will the shower last?

HBB: Our shower trays are a quality product which are manufactured using an acrylic surface material and back filled with fibreglass. We use a resin encapsulated backing board to spread the weight and provide rigidity, and all of our shower trays are fully self-supporting with numerous PVC feet. Our trays are tested to withstand a 300kg weight on a cycle test of 10,000 impressions.
