If you paint a house, you’re likely to paint two coats for a nice finish. But you’ll no doubt be painting those same two coats in ten years’ time because paint finishes available in New Zealand struggle to provide the longevity to last much longer in the harsh local climate. Similarly, colour-coated claddings and roofing materials often struggle to get far. It’s been difficult for developers and designers to find cladding and roofing products that will give the homeowner a good return on their investment in terms of longevity – that is until now.

Colour coated aluminium from EURAMAX is taking longevity to the next level, says Ambro Metals’ Adrian Ward. “EURAMAX pre-coated aluminium produced in Europe provides a wide range of pre-coated aluminium and can be produced with exceptionally high-quality paint systems. EURAMAX product supplied here by Ambro Metals Ltd is specifically tailored for our unique geographic position – they understand it’s hard down here.”

The advanced paint application system applied to a highly corrosion resistant grade of aluminium is called polyvinyl de fluoride (PVDF). The PVDF is applied in multilayers and some finishes can have up to five layers of this top quality architectural paint applied. This results in warranties that can be provided for inland situations of up to 40 years – “far beyond any coloured steel product here used for roofing and cladding” not to mention high strength warranties right on the oceanfront.

The PVDF paint system is applied in Holland and is the best protection against the extreme UV levels in New Zealand, salt aggravation and many other atmospheric conditions that take its toll on exterior cladding over time here.

“The technology used over there is very advanced and the modern coating lines that they use provide us with the unique finish strength,” says Adrian.

The product is suited to all single skin architectural cladding applications including architectural roofing profiles, guttering, rainwater goods, and garage doors “the applications are endless really.”

A range of stock finishes held at Ambro Metals have evolved to suit local market architectural desires and are available in single colour tones, fine matte metallic finishes and décor or design finishes. Beyond the locally stocked finishes there is an expansive EURAMAX range of dimensional finishes that give a sense of depth rather than a flat tone, “they can match anodised materials to provide that misty and unique aesthetic, and they also provide a Mica range called EuraMica which gives a pearlescent iridescent finish allowing a building to change tones from different angles.” There are many ranges to explore.

EURAMAX provides a range of textured finishes too called “EuraTex”, the rough surface feel gives a sense of more than just a flat painted surface. Alternative paint finishes can be made to mimic stone, wood grain, travertine, even concrete - anything that a client or project desires in architectural profiles can be provided on Aluminium. This allows designers to expand their horizons when it comes to designing a projects exterior with durable aluminium for the wall cladding and roof. All this with the peace of mind that the quality will last the distance.

Another offering that will provide options for designers and architects is an inland finish called “EuraZinc”. EuraZinc contains fine zinc particles in the paint top coat which enables the finish to weather like zinc, while still retaining the durability and corrosive-resistance of the aluminium substrate with a welcomed price point. Another finish the team at Ambro Metals have personally created with EURAMAX is called “Cyprus Oxide” it creates a similar effect, except with a deep crimson weathered tone similar to that of copper and bronze. It’s good news for projects where the desired bronze/copper tone is needed delivering a stable and consistent look along with an palatable price point. All this built by European excellence providing a unique and superior finished product.

Adrian says these similar looking finishes are not being seen as substitute options.

With the direct amount of education the Team at Ambro Metals is providing to the market place, specifiers, home owners along with project members are now starting to understand that when choosing EURAMAX they are selecting the highest level of pre-painted product you can obtain globally for these types of applications. They can be assured it is a high quality coloured option applied to an aluminium substrate along with the ultimate top coat finish,” says Adrian.

While alternative cladding options of this calibre require a maintenance regime, EURAMAX is essentially maintenance free, requiring only a soft wash with a hose twice a year, which provides homeowners with a sense of relief - removing it from that holiday chore list!

The pre-coated material can be used in any folded metal application and is turned into various profiles, most popular is the European tray style for roofing and cladding called “Angle Seam”. It is widely used throughout New Zealand, recently in Wynyard Quarter projects and in various other commercial projects, but also in a large number of residential homes, where homeowners are looking for a point of difference, longevity and a higher-end look.
