High-performance TPO membranes are causing a stir in the New Zealand building market.

For almost 40 years, Equus has been a leading manufacturer and supplier of specialist coating systems to the construction industry, for everything from sub-basement to roof levels.

The company has, in that time, also positioned itself as a trusted partner to some of the world’s best known membrane manufacturers, says Technical Consultant, Callum McDougall.

“We have recently teamed with Soprema—a global leader—to launch a world-class, cost-effective single layer Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) roofing membrane in New Zealand.

“Equus Soprema Flagon TPO may be new to the local market but it has a proven track record the world over.”

Flagon TPO waterproofing is BBA certified, FM and EN approved, and is manufactured according to the principles of sustainable construction.

Taking roofing membranes in a new direction

“Most people would be familiar with torch-on membranes as these have been the industry mainstay for decades. While these products are perfectly suitable, they do carry the added risk of fire if proper attention to safety is not paid during the application process.

“TPO membranes, by contrast, require no open flame during application as the membrane is installed using cold adhesive with the lap seams sealed using heat vulcanising technology. As a result TPO membranes are seen as a viable alternative and have a good name in the market at the moment, particularly given industry scrutiny around the flammability of various building materials.”

Equus Soprema Flagon TPO also features other benefits, such as: high UV and puncture resistance; comes with BBA and EN certifications, as well as being FM approved; and, carries a 20-year material warranty.

If a man’s home is his castle: uses for TPO membranes

“Our focus with Equus Soprema Flagon TPO is on the commercial and higher-end residential markets, where a high level of architectural detailing is desired,” Callum says.

“That architectural element was one of the reasons why we chose the Soprema offering when we were looking for a suitable TPO product for the New Zealand market. Unlike the other products available, we have gone with a darker colour—Basalt Grey—as standard as we feel that will resonate better with the Kiwi sensibility.

“Also, Equus Soprema Flagon TPO offers higher solar reflectivity than existing products, along with fast, cost-effective installation.”
