The house with its innovative floor plan stands for a new type of living: "Our society consists of more than just the traditional family, so we need to develop apartment buildings that correspond to that," say the architects. As part of this new concept, the cluster apartments provide a large shared kitchen and living room while comprising five to seven mini-apartments with one or two rooms, tea kitchen and a bathroom.

The architects continue: "The entire exterior wall of the Cluster House was executed as a monolithic masonry block with integrated perlite insulation. All geometric dimensions of the building are based on a multiple of the dimensions of the bricks in order to keep waste to a minimum and not to reduce their insulating properties. The result is an outstanding example of affordable quality housing."

Bramall Construction Apartments, UK built 36 two-bedroom apartments with Porotherm Clay Block to help a new housing development reach Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. The construction team specified Porotherm both for its laying speed and to maximise the thermal efficiency, reducing heating and cooling costs for residents in the apartments over the longer term.

Porotherm Clay Block construction remains one of the most sustainable solutions for modern buildings. The natural properties of clay offer long-term sustainability, and the manufacture of the blocks is increasingly low-carbon. The blocks provide improved strength, durability and light weight compared to other masonry options. The built-in sound and temperature control benefits of clay block help to create an ideal internal living environment.
