The ball’s in your court...

Is tennis your chosen sport? Perhaps you prefer basketball, or maybe skateboarding is more your scene. Either way there’s a Mapecoat TNS product specifically formulated to create the right sports court, skate park or urban colour scape for your needs.

Words by Justin Foote

Across New Zealand, from township to city, the country is dotted with numerous council-owned and private sporting facilities that have provided countless hours of enjoyment and fierce competition for generations of Kiwis.

The one thing these facilities have in common is the army of council employees or volunteers who have worked tirelessly to ensure they remain in tip top condition—repainting lines and resurfacing courts.

Thanks to a range of acrylic coatings and water-based epoxies, all that ongoing hard work may just be a thing of the past, says MBP (NZ) Ltd National Product Manager—Industrial and Sports Flooring, Scott Lacey.

“Mapecoat TNS coating systems are a suite of acrylic sports surfacing systems, designed for ‘all-weather’ outdoor and indoor installations for tennis, netball, basketball and multi-sport courts; as well as other decorative and protective urban area applications like cycleways, walkways and road demarcations.

“Eight Mapecoat TNS products are available in New Zealand, covering all sporting applications from indoor and outdoor courts through to professional-grade tennis and multisport facilities, as well as for use in high-traffic areas such as skate parks and road ways.”

The site of a former tennis club has been transformed into a vibrant multi-court, multi-purpose playground.

Mapecoat TNS: products for sports flooring

“Mapecoat TNS products are particularly popular with councils as they produce hard-wearing surfaces, most of which meet the building code’s wet and dry non-slip coefficient. They are also certified by the International Tennis Federation and the New Zealand Netball Association.

“Among the benefits of using products from the Mapecoat TNS range is the ability to create sporting surfaces out of just about any bare area, as well as protective safety demarcation or any other decorative non-slip surface.

“There are also a number of decorative applications possible thanks to the almost unlimited range of colours possible—36 as standard, along with bespoke colours through the TNS colour chart or colour-matched to existing colours as well.”

One of the newest products in the range is Mapecoat TNS EXTREME, characterised by its excellent resistance to traffic, its high level of durability and the performance properties of the product, all essential features when creating lanes and tracks.

EXTREME is rapid-drying, offers a high level of versatility in terms of its ease of application over existing substrates and the possibility to create coatings in the colour of your choice.

On the fringe of Auckland’s Victoria Park, the public basketball courts received Mapecoat TNS finishes as part of the joint Auckland City Council and Spark initiative—The Boroughs Project.

Mapecoat TNS: designed for our lifestyles

Scott says Mapecoat TNS products need to be applied by trained applicators. MBP offers in-person and online training and has a network of approved applicators across the country.

“Training courses are held either at our head office in Auckland or are available online, depending on whether they are in-person or online courses. MBP holds several courses for applicators and specifiers throughout the year and people are encouraged to visit our website regularly to see when the next course is available.”

Mapei-trained applicators have completed numerous projects throughout the country including a number of council basketball courts, residential tennis courts and cricket pitches, schools, thoroughfares and walkways around public and commercial infrastructure and pedestrian bridges and cycle ways.

Cameron Rennie of Park–Life, one of MBP’s trained applicators, had this to say: “Our mission is to create active spaces to keep communities fit and social. Reimagining courts and play areas to accommodate sport, recreation and play, with the creative use of colour, contributes to this mission. Our team can take a client’s design and realise it on the ground with the Mapecoat TNS EXTREME system to create amazing results.

“The Mapecoat TNS EXTREME system meets the brief. The colour range provides lots of options for creativity and the product delivers on performance. EXTREME has been proven to meet the requirements for a hard-wearing, low-maintenance surface that is high grip for player safety and performance and can handle the abuse from scooters, skateboards and bikes.

“The success of our collaboration using Mapei products is evidenced through the scope and scale of our projects delivered for the Ministry of Education and various local government bodies around Aotearoa. The MPB 10-year product warranty backed by our application warranty provides our clients with total assurance.”

Scott adds: “The products are extremely versatile, quick to apply and facilities can be ready to use in as little as one day. Mapecoat TNS RACE TRACK is one such product perfect for projects requiring quick turnaround. Surface drying time ranges from 15–30 minutes depending on the ambient temperature and two coats can be applied within two hours of each other.

“Mapecoat TNS products come with a 10-year warranty and in most situations you can reasonably expect 20-plus years’ service life.”

Scott says that although Mapecoat TNS products are manufactured in Italy, there are no issues around availability as MBP keeps a large stock of all systems in its Auckland depot and customers can expect a turnaround time of two days for delivery throughout New Zealand.
