Designing interiors: homes that speak of the individual

Debbie Cavit is in the business of creating homes. She’s been focused on this goal for almost 30 years and over the decades her company Cavit+Co has become renowned for its exquisite range of homewares - covering everything from Egyptian cotton bed linen to a wide selection of furniture. We spoke to her about blending timeless elegance with home comforts.

Walking into a well designed room where the furniture and finishings speak of the building’s architectural style, are in proportion and represent a timeless beauty is a wholly different experience to walking into one where this is not the case. In many cases though, a perfectly balanced (or unbalanced) room won’t be a conscious realisation - a room will either immediately offer a feeling of balance and peace, or a subtle feeling of unease.

“Creating beautiful, peaceful rooms in the home is about balance,” Cavit+Co’s Debbie Cavit says. “It’s about proportion and getting the right balance to create a space of emotional harmony. These subtleties of interior design may not be immediately obvious, and may not even be consciously noticed but when they are right the feeling of a space is harmonious, peaceful and beautiful and that’s what we have always aimed to create.”

In line with a changing luxury interiors market, Cavit+Co has recently shut the doors to its former expansive Auckland showroom and moved to a new space at 463 Parnell Road where the new focus is dedicated to working in close collaboration with every client in a luxury procurement capacity.

“For us, this is an incredibly exciting development. It means our focus is now predominantly on working with individuals and designers to curate individual and unique interior spaces from our extensive network of global luxury brands. What we’ve found over the last few years is that people are much more design driven and very well educated in what they want in their home. They know what they’re after but they’re often not quite sure how to create a considered interior from lighting to floor rugs to furniture and artwork and how they can find specific pieces from different designers and meld them together. It’s this that we can now offer to every client; a wholly consultative approach to assist with the selection of each of the pieces in their home giving a bespoke curation of spaces,” Debbie says.

Cavit + Co’s exclusive ranges are sourced from more than 40 global suppliers, each of which operates at the pinnacle of design in terms of craftsmanship, materiality and sustainability.

Many of the ranges are those of top American designers - a fact that goes against what many New Zealanders associate with quality design and homewares, innately linking the best design to Europe. “The beauty of the best American designers is the exquisite quality of their work, with practical designs that never overlook comfort,” Debbie says. “The level of sophistication and elegance in their work is unparalleled as is the attention to detail in the craftsmanship.”

Beyond the American design houses, Cavit+Co offers a wide range of exclusive products spanning countries of origin including Italy, Belgium, the UK, France, and Mexico. “Each brand is an example of exemplary design; representing understated elegance paired with exceptional quality.”

The exclusivity of Cavit+Co’s offerings are unparalleled in New Zealand, with collections from some of the world’s most renowned designers. “These include the very refined styling of Baker and McGuire furniture and the superb quality and design of Italian-designed pieces by Baxter, Sutherland outdoor furniture and handmade ViSpring mattresses from the United Kingdom,” Debbie says.

However, despite the high-end nature of Cavit+Co’s offerings, the ability to select from thousands of pieces means the option exists for clients of varying budgets to enjoy exquisite homeware and furniture. “We are able to select carefully for our clients, ensuring the pieces are right for them while constantly being mindful of their budget. In this way, we are able to layer spaces beautifully, while adhering to the principles of quality and timeless beauty while maximising impactful use of budget.

“More and more, we’re seeing people in different situations investing in beautiful pieces for the home - whether that be large or small spaces,” Debbie says.

Cavit+Co specialises in bringing luxury into the everyday - creating homes of timeless elegance and beauty. “We believe in creating an enduring style; one that transcends fashion and straddles the boundary between classic and contemporary.
