Bold and beautiful: large-format porcelain with a difference

What can be used for external and internal wall cladding, floor tiles, benchtops and shower cavities and looks as beautiful as it is functional?

Words by ArchiPro Editorial Team

A product new to the global market, this large-format porcelain material offers a striking natural form that is visually indistinguishable from the materials it replicates. But it’s not just its beauty that offers an enticing appeal, it is its vast functional qualities that offer a plethora of benefits - from the ability to cut directly on the surface to its ability to withstand burning hot pots being placed on it.

And that’s just indoors. Externally, this material can be used for cladding and will never fade, discolour or degrade and will withstand extreme temperatures.

Known as Xtone, it is produced in Spain by one of the world’s most well known porcelain manufacturers, Porcelanosa. “The world's most recognised Ceramic and Porcelain Brand,” Porcelanosa New Zealand's Dan Shelley says.

“Their brand is synonymous with quality and cutting edge technology and commitment to ecological production, which is why Xtone is having an instant global impact on the market.”

The use of the latest manufacturing technology means these extruded large-format porcelain slabs offer a striking beauty with an unsurpassed realism, covering a wide range of natural materials from timber to stone, as well as concrete and marble.

“The technology behind Xtone is incredible and is streets ahead of what is commonly used to produce large-format porcelain, especially in terms of the realism that can be created,” Dan says.

“Sandstone is a prime example. It’s a natural material sought after for its beauty but it also has a high porosity and isn’t a hygienic surface. It couldn’t be used for applications such as benchtops because it would simply crumble. What Xtone allows is for the beauty of this material to be recreated with exacting detail to allow it to be used as a central feature where the natural material could not.”

Xtone is fired at 1200 degrees Celsius and then baked at 900 degrees Celsius, a process that results in an inherent strength that is hard to compare to in large-format surfaces, Dan says.

Beautiful scratch-resistant benchtops

Xtone is ideal for use as a benchtop where direct contact with food is likely because it doesn’t release volatile organic compounds and prevents the proliferation of fungi and bacteria. “The non-porosity of the material prevents the absorption of liquids and gases, preventing the accumulation of odors.

“Xtone has less than 0.1 per cent porosity and is completely hygienic. Its inherent strength means you can cut directly onto the surface if it’s being used as a benchtop without scratching it, or place hot pots directly from the stovetop or oven onto the surface without impact - there is no other material you can use where this is possible without damage."

As an alternative to tiling, Xtone offers the possibility of creating seamless bathroom walls and shower cavities with slabs able to be installed that reach from the floor to the ceiling, with only vertical grout joins, Dan says.

“Outside, it is frost resistant and will never fade or lose its colour, and due to its large-format slimline slabs it makes for an alluring contemporary cladding material.”

The Xtone collection is available in a wide range of ‘colours’, each of which replicate a specific natural material - ranging from timber to veined marble. Concrete and blackened metal are also popular iterations that make up the latest in the Xtone product offering.
