Evolving creativity: the possibilities of designer rugs

The Evolve Awards is a bi-annual programme which was originally envisioned by Designer Rugs as a way to foster creativity in the interior design sector.

The result is the ID Collection, a sought-after range of 100% New Zealand wool rugs designed by both up and coming and experienced designers. With the 2019 Evolve Awards winners announced, and the first New Zealander named as a winner, this unique awards programme continues to foster and celebrate creativity across Australasia and beyond.

Each year the programme asks designers to create designs for New Zealand wool rugs. Designer Rugs then turns the seven finalists’ and two winners’ creations into rugs, which become part of the ID Collection.

“This is a competition we initially launched in 2010 that has grown exponentially every year it is held,” Designer Rugs’ Laura Furey says. “The award came from the desire to show the possibilities of custom rug design to the interior design community, as well as support an industry that has supported us for over 30 years.

“With entries open to designers in Australia and New Zealand, and more recently other countries including Hong Kong, it was great to see the first New Zealander named a winner in 2019.

“Christian Burgos’ piece, Cavern, is a testament to the possibilities of design in the context of rugs and speaks to the world-class talent that exists in New Zealand. With over 800 entrants in 2019, the winning spots are highly sought after design accolades.

“The two ultimate winners of each category - one for experienced designers and one for up-and-coming designers - each win a trip to Milan’s Salone del Mobile the following year.”

For 2019 winner of the up-and-coming designer category, Christian Burgos, the design process was born from the desire to create a rug with an adventurous spirit; a cavern where the mind can explore and wander.

“I created a series of portals layered over each other to evoke a sense of depth. The design evolved into an ethereal web of organic structures that dynamically shift in scale and colour, creating a peculiar, otherworldly atmosphere that brings the rug to life,” Christian says.

“The final design of Cavern is an entity of its own; a free-spirited rug unbounded by structure and order, which was only made possible through abstraction and working within the required parameters. The design can be interpreted in many ways - it could be seen as a series of doorways, black holes or even a cave. But in the end, it is ultimately a cavern for thought.”

For Laura and the Designer Rugs team, the benefits of the Evolve Awards are vast. “This is a programme that we are incredibly proud to be able to run. It fosters creativity, encouraging both up-and-coming and experienced designers to push the boundaries and create a range of stunning designs.”

The designs from the 2019 Evolve Awards winners in the ID Collection are available to purchase and will arrive in New Zealand early this year.
