Alongside offering a wide range of quality international furniture, Statement iD is also a specialist in Furniture Fixture & Equipment (FF&E) procurement for hotel, hospitality and commercial designers, architects and specifiers.

Recently, the company was involved in the interior of the luxurious new Four Points by Sheraton hotel, located in the heart of downtown Auckland. ArchiPro caught up with Statement iD’s Tracy Cook-Kelland to learn more about working on the hotel’s New Zealand-inspired interiors.

Tell me about Statement iD’s involvement in the interior design process for the Four Points by Sheraton hotel?

We were involved in the Four Points by Sheraton hotel interior from the very beginning and had a strong design input for the selection of furniture and finishes for the rooms, working to the layouts created by Dalman Architects. We worked with the hotel owner, Russell Property Group, on the design of the rooms and completed three different mock-up rooms for them to make selections from.

For the level 4 and level 2 public spaces, we worked closely with Studio Design + Architecture, who were the interior designers for the space. They selected furniture and finishes and designed custom joinery items, and Statement iD worked with different manufacturers and artists to bring their designs to life.

Likewise, we worked with Izzard Design in the same way for the procurement of pieces for the level 20 rooftop Churchill gin bar, which will open soon.

All our projects work in different ways and we are happy to have design input if required or to be led by the designer to help get the best outcome and to meet the client’s expectations.

What are some of the main design ideas or themes of the Four Points by Sherato interiors?

The design of the building’s interiors drew inspiration from the original Queens Head façade and the new blue glass building that springs out the top. We were limited with the blue glass, as it put an unusual spin on what colours could be used. The blue hints in the furniture and tiles reflect this, while natural tones complement the building’s outlook over trees, ocean and the surrounding area.

We wanted to bring a real sense of New Zealand/Auckland and the local culture into the whole property through the artwork and various elements throughout, such as one of the original pieces of artwork in the reception area that features the copper from the building’s old wiring. The choice of bent wood furniture and the carpet are both a modern take on the old.

What were some of the challenges involved in this project?

The conversion from an office building to a hotel meant that the overall design of the building did not cater well for the installation of large furniture, and the small lifts made bringing furniture up to all the floors a slow process.

Tell me more about the bespoke furniture items that Statement iD introduced into the Four Points by Sheraton project.

Statement iD worked closely with Studio Design + Architecture on the design of the public space. There was a strong push from the owners to feature New Zealand design and manufacture, so we worked with a range of furniture, lighting and joinery manufacturers throughout New Zealand to create the pieces that Studio D+A had designed. Most of the furniture in the hotel is New Zealand-made, with the exception of some items from our European brands TON and Lebello, and some of the lighting.

Which TON and Lebello pieces were chosen and where have they been placed?

TON furniture has been used throughout the rooms, with the 002 chair as the desk chair and Split lounge chair as the bedroom chair. TON furniture has a great design aesthetic and is hard wearing and durable, so it was used in the rooms to withstand the test of time.

We have also used some TON Split dining chairs and Merano armchairs throughout the restaurant, and the Lebello Chair 7 has been selected for the outdoor area by Studio D+A. The Churchill Bar on level 20 will have the TON Chair 811 and Lebello outdoor furniture, selected by Izzard Design.

How was Statement iD involved in creating the uniforms for the hotel staff?

Statement iD worked with Elizabeth Michael Uniforms and the hotel operating staff to create a unique New Zealand-made and designed uniform. Catherine at Elizabeth Michael helped create a motif using the artwork showcased in the corridors of the hotel. This was then fabricated into an embroidery patch and used across all uniform styles.

What was the overall experience of working on the Four Points by Sheraton hotel?

We really enjoyed working on this project. From our amazing client through to the talented designers and lovely hotel staff who we worked with; we had a lot of fun along the way. We are very pleased with the results achieved and we managed to bring the FF&E in on time and under budget.
