Defining and creating the feeling of space in areas where it is lacking takes particular skill. In terms of kitchen trends at the moment though, the tones that are the most sought after are making things easier.

“We’re seeing a real warmth coming through at the moment with deep, dark colours used to create a moody feeling,” Royale Kitchens’ Mathew Coles says. “Rich texture is also important with strong wood grains being heavily favoured.”

Interestingly, in smaller spaces these tones work well to extend the feeling of available space, allowing cabinetry to almost melt away into the background. “We’re seeing the idea of the hidden kitchen developing at the moment too, especially in apartments and smaller homes.”

In these smaller abodes where space is at a premium and kitchens are often integrated within a larger multi-use area, hidden kitchens become more like a piece of furniture rather than an appliance-heavy functional space.

“With appliances integrated into cabinetry, when the kitchen is shut off it becomes just another object in the room,” Mathew says.

In these situations especially, the deep, moody tones help to alleviate the sense of integration into open-plan rooms. “Lots of really textural elements add depth and points of interest as opposed to the white on white that is now well and truly a thing of the past.”

But it is a common misconception that whites work to create space, with darker tones doing the opposite. “People tend to think darker cabinetry will look quite oppressive when it’s actually the opposite,” Mathew says. “Darker tones blend away into the background, melting into space.”

Dark tones are also colours that add warmth to space, and combined with textural wood grains, for example, can offer a stunning, rich aesthetic.

“We’re finding, especially with apartments and townhouses, clients and designers are wanting to achieve a seamless flow throughout the home so we’re designing kitchens as well as cabinetry for laundries, bathrooms, wardrobes and storage.”

Laundries in compact spaces are, like kitchens, often not able to be placed in separate areas so the desire for appliances to be integrated within cabinetry remains a key feature. “This is where the dark, moody tones work so well, allowing a laundry to become more like a piece of furniture than a functional cleaning space.”

Royale Kitchens work closely with clients, offering a bespoke design service and project management from concept through to installation, as well as working with architects and kitchen designers to manufacture and install their designs.
