We bet you’ve never seen an enameled steel basin like this.Kaldewei has recently launched Miena, a range of ultra light, incredibly strong basins using the brand’s advanced material technology. Could this be just the thing for your bathroom? We spoke to Andrea Barzotto to learn more.

When you think of enamelled steel basins, you don’t often picture a light, highly designed product. One German brand plans to change that, however. Last year, Kaldewei launched their Miena range of wash basin bowls, injecting a new, superior product into the market.

But is an enamel on steel bathroom basin right for you? We spoke with Andrea Barzotto of Metrix Bathrooms about the Miena basins and what homeowners need to know.

Putting the spotlight on KALDEWEI steel enamel

Stainless steel has long been associated with durability and resistance, while glass is supremely hygienic, easy to maintain and unaffected by corrosive chemicals. Kaldewei steel enamel is also heat resistant, which means burning and smouldering objects won’t leave any marks on the surface. Surfaces remain unchanged by UV rays as well, meaning your basin wont yellow or fade over time.

“The main advantage of the enamel on steel basins we offer is how resistant they are. The surface is extremely strong,” explains Andrea. So strong, in fact, that he and his team sometimes get a bit carried away.

"To demonstrate the resistance of the Kaldewei steel enamel baths, which are made of the same materials, we use a steel brush and nothing happens, we pour nail polish in - nothing. We even light a fire on coals and at the end, everything is clean and the bath is completely unscathed.”

While this may not be the level of wear in your bathroom, it is reassuring to know your amazing KALDEWEI steel enamel comes from years of experience manufacturing baths.

Introducing: Miena

“Everything is made in Kaldewei’s factory in Germany, where they have a long history specialising in enamel steel baths. They decided to transfer the technology they’ve developed into the basin range, designing bowls with the exact same thickness, components and resistance properties as the baths,” says Andrea.

“The beauty of creating a basin from the bath is that the steel you can create something incredibly thin but strong. Visually, it’s a very soft product, but it’s also incredibly tough. If you were to compare to say, a glass bowl of the same shape and thickness, it would likely be much more delicate.”

The beauty also lies in what you can do in your bathroom. The washbasins are available in round, square or rectangular options and can be matched with an identical bath, keeping with Kaldewei’s “Perfect Match” approach. Miena basins are available in Kaldewei’s exclusive Coordinated Colours Collection as well as more traditional bathroom shades. In Metrix Bathrooms’ showroom, you’ll find the range in white, catania grey matt, anthracite matt and lava black matt.

“It’s a highly designed product, that’s really in line with what you see in bathrooms today. The basin has these delicate, clean lines and really beautiful geometric shapes. It’s a really visual basin, without being too polarising - this is a basin that can work in any bathroom and suit a wide variety of architectural styles,” says Andrea.
