Think pools are just for homeowners with expansive backyards and big budgets? Not so! The trend for small plunge pools, above ground pools and lap pools means there are so many options to consider for your compact outdoor space.

Many of us have never considered integrating a pool into our outdoor space because it’s a traditionally high cost exercise that requires a big bit of dirt. But with plunge pools, lap pools and other compact sizes now available, it’s time to reconsider reviving those pool party dreams at your place. Here are five pools for your small outdoor space.

1. Plunge pools

If you’ve got a postage stamp for a backyard, a plunge pool is ideal. They’re not designed for “swimming” as such, but more for taking a dip and getting refreshed. They come in infinite sizes and shapes and above and in-ground options. Some companies even offer the ability to convert them to heated spa pools for colder times of the year.

2. Freestanding pools

Freestanding pools have come a long way! In the past you were faced with blue polythene and plastic pipe framing, which could really bring the backyard aesthetic down, but now permanent freestanding pools come in as many finishes as in-ground ones, and they’re very easy to have installed. Ideal for if your backyard is sloped, because you can integrate decking to create a seamless look.

3. Lap pools

Unlike the plunge pool, a lap pool is designed specifically for underwater exercise. They are for those who don’t want to just get wet, and are ideal if your budget or section doesn’t run to a full sized pool. Both above-ground and in-ground options are available, so if swimming is your workout of choice, you should consider integrating one into your backyard.

4. The splash pool

If you have little ones who love to get wet, but you want a bit of an upgrade from the rubber-ringed inflatable pool, you might want to consider a plunge pool with a splash deck. There’s a deep end where you can stand, with a small splash deck for littlies to hang out, so everyone stays nice and cool. Look out for models with additional steps and a child safety ledge, for maximum relaxation.
