Thinking outside the square for carpet solutions for multi-unit dwellings and hotels: international trends lead the way for beautiful yet hard-working flooring for multi-unit and hotel spaces – the options will surprise.

Heritage Carpet partners - modulyss and Bentley Mills LA - bring their knowledge of trends from Europe and USA to our round-table discussions on the evolution of what the market is looking for in carpets for the multi-residential and hotel sectors.

As New Zealand building consents ramp up for multi-unit dwellings, we are well-placed to discuss the future of flooring in this sector, and bring you the options we recommend for durability, practicality, sustainability and aesthetics.

PLUSH CUT PILE – PLAIN BROADLOOM

The ever popular sensory and visual delight of a luxury, plush broadloom is a dense cut pile.

Bentley Mills LA is a carbon neutral company making a huge variety of carpets from tiles to broadlooms as well as LVT. Their cut piles are beautiful for mid to high end multi-residential solutions.

Anarchy from Bentley is a textured cut pile with an 8mm pile height. Available in 7 neutral shades it is lush, forgiving and long-lasting, delivering the performance of a commercial carpet with a look that says you’re home.

Kings Road is a Bentley luxury, cut pile, Colourcast nylon broadloom boasting plush softness alongside longevity. The CRI Green Label plus with recycled content comes in a stunning offering of 21 different colours with a 7mm+ pile height. You can choose from broadloom, or to mix and match in common areas with planks or tiles.

PATTERN AND TEXTURE

Bentley Mills LA make a huge range of broadlooms, many of which look incredible in residential spaces.

Carrying all the eco-labels you’d hope for, with warranties that satisfy the rigours of commercial spaces, Bentley broadlooms can offer durability and looks, that step into something a little different – and we love them!

For multi-residential common areas, you can change up the look with more texture or pattern with ranges from Bentley that are available with the Elite Flex backing, which provides additional wear resistance, maintaining the look of the top carpet and providing an impervious barrier to spills.

Ritual has 13 duo-tones in this gorgeous carpet. Tufted, textured loop with 3 pile heights is an easy-to-live-with solution that is practical whilst being a high-end statement carpet. It’s a stunning look and part of Bentley’s Outskirts Collection.

Ponder is part of the Meiso Collection by Bentley. A solution Dyed, tufted, textured loop, the patterned carpet comes in 12 colours.

From Bentley’s Outskirts Collection, Repose is a solution-dyed, tufted textured loop in 13 colourways. A subtle blend of colours adds life to your floor. Elite Flex impervious backing is available for Repose Broadloom.

Paris Tweed is a tip-sheared, tufted carpet conceived from classic fabrics and lush fibres. The small scale pattern features striated definition and metallic yarns. Comes with an option for Elite Flex impervious backing for all 13 colours in the range.

TILES – EUROPE IS LEADING THE WAY

The European trend of using carpet tiles in residential settings might feel odd to us at our end of the world, but it is a fast-growing trend that makes a lot of sense. If a tile is damaged, simply replace it. It’s a great eco-friendly solution when you think about it that way, as well as being incredibly convenient and cost-effective.

We have a few favourites.

Gleam is the aptly named luxury cut pile tile range from modulyss.

With 27 colours of subtle shimmer to choose from, Gleam uses a combination of matt and glossy yarn to create a richness and shimmer that’s soft to the touch. Choose one colour, or mix it up.

Made from 100% recycled nylon yarn that’s 100% sustainable, the total height is a silky 9.5mm.

DSGN Absolute is a great option for multi-residential projects from modulyss. Absolute features subtle contrast of two tones, offering a unique nuanced look. The loop pile design comes in 16 colours.

Bentley’s Paris Tweed is also popular as a tile for residential – more information on the European origins of the design above. You could use the same colour for tiles throughout an apartment and break up corridors and common areas by introducing colour accents.

Off the Chain from Bentley mimics the highs and lows of chain stitches. The tufted, textured loop offers a gorgeous texture in 12 colourways – and it does come in broadloom as well as tile.

Root is another from Bentley’s Meiso collection. A tufted, textured, solution-dyed loop with a tone-on-tone pattern that you can have fun with as a residential tile. 12 colourways to play with. (Root is also available in broadloom, with Elite Flex impervious backing for extra performance for higher wear zones like receptions, accessways and common areas).
