Making the most of your outdoor experience

Turn your patio or deck into an outdoor room with the addition of a retractable roof.

Following the recent announcement of new building consent exemptions for certain low-risk home improvement projects by the Honorable Jenny Salesa, Minister for Building and Construction, Kiwi homeowners now have a green light to improve the amenity of their homes without having to go through a time-consuming and potentially costly consents process.

Two of these exemptions relate to ground floor verandas/porches/awnings of up to 30m2 and carports up to 40m2.

“This is great news for homeowners, who will now be able to either undertake themselves, or employ contractors to undertake, a range of simple projects that can have increased resale value—as well as a number of social—benefits for their home,” says Patrick Albertson, Technical Representative for Oztech.

“The money saved, too, can be put to good use, allowing homeowners to upgrade their projects with the addition of a retractable shade system, which will transform a veranda into a fully-fledged outdoor room that can be utilised year round.”

Being able to completely open or close the system at any time gives total flexibility for enjoying outdoor spaces.

Maximise the liveability of your outdoor area

Oztech has been designing and manufacturing retractable shade systems for residential and commercial outdoor applications for nearly 10 years and has become the most installed system in New Zealand in that time with 550 installations.

“The beauty of these systems is that they can be fully customised to each project,” says Patrick. “We’ve designed systems from as small as 10m2 for a residential install all the way up to a massive 4500m2 commercial install.

Oztech systems are available in widths starting at 5m for a single module, up to 13m for three modules, with a maximum projection of 10m, providing a solution to cover areas up to 130m2 per system. Linking systems is also possible and made easy through the patented joining system, which ensures 100 per cent waterproof joins every time.

“There are four system profiles to choose from and the framing structure can be affixed directly to the side of the house or to existing decking. We only use 6063-T6 aluminum for our structures and 316 marine-grade stainless steel for our connection points. This guarantees maximum strength and durability. Additionally, customers can choose from the range of Dulux colours to match their customised system to their existing joinery.”

Customers can rest assured that the Oztech retractable shade system has been rated for New Zealand conditions, says Patrick.

Designed to withstand our unique environment

“Each Oztech system is wind-load tested to 150km/h and the innovative Serge Ferrari PVC fabric is both fire-rated and 100 per cent waterproof and is available in a range of colours in both opaque and transparent options, providing maximum stability and resistance to temperature, moisture and dirt. It doesn’t shrink or stretch and the acrylic top coating makes it very easy to clean. It also carries a five-year warranty and often attains a lifespan of more than 15 years.”

Oztech utilises a nationwide network of retailers who work directly with the client to carry out a site visit to get all requisite measurements. Renders are then produced of the finished system and once approved the system is manufactured and shipped to the retailer for onsite assembly and installation.

“Ultimately, this system is about maximising the liveability of our homes and having the freedom to adapt our living environment to our needs at any given time. Having the flexibility to open up or close down the system means we can mitigate the effects of inclement weather or take full advantage of good weather conditions.

“Smart adaptability means the system can be tied into existing home automation software and customers can specify the inclusion of LED lighting, which not only makes spaces accessible day and night but also does away with the need for additional stand-alone lighting, helping to keep outdoor spaces free from unnecessary clutter and results in a more pleasant, glare-free setting.”
