What are the health benefits of copper-plated hardware in your home?

Natural antimicrobial properties of copper-based metals reduce spread of germs.

Words by ArchiPro Editorial Team

In the early part of the nineteenth century, scientists confirmed the role microbes played in the spread of infectious diseases and a whole new level of scientific investigation was embarked upon.

In 1852, French physician Victor Burq discovered that people who worked with copper registered fewer deaths from cholera than any other demographic. His subsequent research confirmed that copper naturally exhibited antimicrobial properties—an occurrence that would come to be known as the oligodynamic effect.

“Comprehensive testing of copper and its alloy metals, brass and bronze particularly, has confirmed this inherent ability to kill a wide range of harmful microbes and that high-touch products made from these metals can help reduce the transmission of disease-causing organisms,” says Chant Hardware’s Graham Chant.

Heavy metal fan: solid brass meets copper electroplate

“Chant specialises in the manufacture of high-end hardware for residential, commercial and marine applications, with most of our products being made from brass or bronze. We also offer copper electroplating.

“Our brass has a 60 per cent copper content and we can use copper electroplating to provide the greater antimicrobial benefits of pure copper. Our bronze has a copper content of 85 per cent. These finishes give our products high ‘contact killing’ properties.

“When the metallic finishes of copper, bronze or brass are not desired, we can powder coat our products with Dulux Clinikill in their extensive range of colours. Dulux Clinikill differs from cooper-based options by using silver ions to provide antimicrobial, antibacterial and antifungal properties on our product surfaces.”
