Narellan Pools New Zealand general manager Brett Williams answers all of your burning questions on how to get the most out of a pool designer, how to elevate your design without breaking the bank, and a few personal questions, too.

What are your top tips for homeowners when they decide to put in a pool?

It is essential to make sure that they have considered the layout and design of their whole garden. Engaging a landscape designer early in the process will result in a better outcome and can save money in the long run. The other important thing to think about is what you want to use your pool for now, and how you will be using it in five or 10 years from now.

When choosing a pool how can you elevate it to the next level?

There are loads of great ways to elevate a pool to the next level, and you don’t need to spend a massive amount of money to get a great result. Visually small things like making sure that the return jets and skimmer are a complimentary colour to the pool finish often won't cost any more and are something that most people won't notice, but if you get it wrong, these fittings can stand out and be very unsightly. Adding spa jets or a water feature can be a cost-effective way of making your pool stand out. And if budget permits, the addition of an adjoining wading pool or spa can yield excellent results.

What do people often not know about having a pool?

A common misconception is that pools cost a lot to run and require a significant time investment to maintain. While this may have been true in years gone by, with the correct equipment set up, operating your pool can be very cost-effective. While all pools need to be maintained, advances in filtration and cleaning equipment technology have drastically reduced the time required to look after your pool.

How can homeowners make the most out of their pool expert? What should they ask you?

Anyone considering investing in a pool should make sure they ask lots of questions of the pool builders they are getting quotes from and ensure that they feel comfortable working with them before signing a contract. Homeowners must understand all their options before making any decisions, especially when choosing the pump and filtration equipment. Often pool companies will include a standard package with their quote, but this may not be the best option for everyone. Homeowners should ask their pool builder to show them all the options and explain everything before making their final decision.
