Ata Touch—intuitive, energy-saving home automation

Human-centred technology with fully integrated single-platform convenience.

Words by Justin Foote

When Peter and Jain Tait were designing their new home, Peter’s nearly 30 years’ experience running TCS (NZ) Limited and working in industrial automation put them in a great position to build a sustainable, energy-efficient, automated home.

However, Peter’s extensive search of comparable residential technologies only led to frustration at the lack of anything that really did deliver significant energy savings and a genuine return on investment.

“I was really surprised that the technologies I was working with on a daily basis in the industrial sphere hadn’t translated across to the residential market and, after a fruitless search, I set about convincing Jain that the only way forward was to create our own distributed control and distributed I/O solution,” says Peter.

The result is Ata Touch, Peter and Jain’s residential and light commercial automation business, featuring world-class, energy-saving solutions developed from robust industrial automation experience and knowhow.

The touch screen controller enables information transfer from one device to another while the touch switch replaces a traditional light switch to provide multi-functional control of lighting, heating and blinds/curtains.

Intuitive energy-saving homes

“Our primary goal was to offer systems that were affordable to the average homeowner rather than being the sole domain of high-end homes and that those systems should actively work to reduce energy consumption and therefore the running costs of an average household,” says Peter.

The first step in creating an energy-saving solution was to look at the three main aspects of energy consumption in the home—heating, water heating and lighting.

“Combined, these three processes account for more than 70 per cent of energy consumption in the average household,” says Peter. “By combining efficient heat-pump technology with the adaptability afforded by home automation, we have been able to realise savings of up to 66 per cent on water heating alone.

“Further incorporation of energy-saving technologies such as LED lighting saves up to 90 per cent power consumption over traditional incandescent lighting solutions.”

Peter says the beauty of the Ata Touch system is that it copies a lot of the thinking from the industrial automation sector—such as running a minimalist power structure; no more large central hub cupboards with miles and miles of cables all over the house, just a touch screen, simple power cabling and a daisy chain data cable—and tailors it to the residential market, with the goal to achieving real cost savings.

“One good example where savings can be found is water heating. Hot water cylinders waste a large amount of energy when run by electric elements or gas. They heat the water to above 60 degrees Celsius and operate 24/7. Ata Touch heats the water quicker and controls the temperature the water is heated to, around 54 degrees Celsius, avoiding energy waste whilst still meeting all hot water needs of the home and all health standards. Ata Touch heats the water cylinder, using the same heat pump that heats or cools your home, significantly minimising capital outlay, and saves up to 66 per cent on the water heating bill. Add the scheduling function to only heat when hot water is required and this gives even greater efficiencies.

“Similarly, touch technology allows you to programme your home to include functions such as non-essential system shutdown when you are away, individual room heating control and automated LED lighting, blinds, windows, garage doors and much more. And this is all on one platform, so you don’t need to have a raft of suppliers and controllers for your home.”

The Ata Touch solution

The Ata Touch solutions are designed by TCS (NZ) Ltd, in Hamilton, and manufactured in New Zealand for New Zealand climatic conditions.

There are three levels of Air & Water solutions. Essential (split hi-wall), Advanced (split ducted, multi zone) and Elite (VRF multi air handler, multi zone).

These offer home heating/cooling and water heating, hydronic underfloor heating, spa and/or pool heating.

Plus there is an additional level of comprehensive intuitive smart home automation that includes elements such as intruder detection, curtains, blinds, windows, gas fires, extractor fans, gates, watering systems, heated towel rails, motion and smoke detectors, garage doors, RFID readers, pet-friendly sensors, mirror demisters, power-point control and more—all controllable from an integrated touch screen and smartphone.

“These solutions have been designed to be totally dynamic and flexible, able to be adapted infinitely over time, with little-to-no disruption to the existing system,” says Peter.

“Importantly, the system is also incredibly user-friendly (intuitive), utilising a graphical user interface that is easy to understand and allows for real-time adjustments as and when needed. Ata Touch is working on the next generation solutions and will be compatible with voice-activated systems such as Alexa for even more functionality.”

Peter is also excited by the further development possibilities around smart subdivisions, which he believes will be the future of new builds in New Zealand.

“I am really keen to explore the possibilities of interconnected smart homes that optimise energy savings across an entire development through localised load shedding based on learned usage within individual homes.”
