Setting up an effective home audio system can sometimes feel like a stab in the dark because it’s difficult to know how a system will perform in your own home – that is until now.

The Sound Store is now offering what designers, architects and consumers have needed for some time – an imitation home in their newly refurbished store. This means you can try before you buy and experience a fully automated home entertainment and sound system interact in the different rooms of the home.

The ‘villa’ comprises all of the rooms of the home where you might expect sounds and home automation: a kitchen, a rumpus/entertainment room, two living rooms and an ‘outdoor’ area. The Sound Store has collaborated with designers and suppliers to create realistic rooms that are designed so that anyone in the architecture or construction industries can get a good understanding of how a home entertainment or sound system might look, sound and interact in a client’s home.

For anyone that falls in love with the room set ups, The Sound Store together with its collaborators can offer a complete solution to interior, automation and sound re-designs.

In the kitchen this looks like a realistic kitchen installation complete with fridge and dishwasher and the sound system is designed so that anyone using the kitchen and watching TV while they cook, for example, aren’t affected by any crossover of sound from the adjacent lounge room where someone might be listening to something else. This means sound can be kept at a comfortable level without having to compete with other rooms.

The sound system throughout the villa is based around multi room audio, says The Sound Store’s Peter Hollins and Chris Du Toit.

“The house can now have several zones in it. You can have sound in the kitchen and in the lounge and take it through to outside. We have the capability to fully automate the home too – with a click of a button you can turn on your TV, turn on your lights, your sounds, and close your blinds.”

The lounge room is one of the most impressive systems in the house from an architectural point of view, because it has the Invisible Sound System by Sonace integrated into its walls.

“You walk into the lounge and you can’t see where the sound comes from – you can’t see a single speaker,” says Peter. “You press a button and the TV will reveal itself from behind the fireplace.”

The home entertainment system here is the Bose 650 home entertainment system which has small, discrete speakers.

The three systems The Sound Store promotes are the highly regarded Sonance, Sonos and Bose systems. Basalte products take care of the home automation side of things.

Each product line can be tested in the realistic set up, this includes a Sonos Sound Bar room – a completely automated home theatre room where all the Sonos products can be trialled.

The outdoor ‘centre’ consists of a deck and a garden with a range of different speakers from the three companies and will include a fully operating outdoor bar.

Chris says The Sound Store takes care of installation too, which includes making sure clients’ internet is up to speed.

“Often people have fibre – but they are operating with an inferior router – it’s like riding a bicycle down an eight-lane highway.”

Once they’ve optimised internet speed, The Sound Store works alongside architects, designers and builders to install full home automation systems and find bespoke solutions for each client’s home automation and sound needs.

The store also services equipment and does trade-ins when people are updating older sound systems for new ones.
