In 2014, the company launched an innovative online specifier called Prolam Pro that helps architects, designers, engineers and home builders to quickly and accurately specify beams for any domestic or commercial project. Amelia Melbourne-Hayward caught up with Prolam’s Owen Smith to find out more about the revolutionary program.

 

What is Prolam Pro and why was it introduced?

Prolam Pro is a free online program that is used for specifying beams for roof and floor framing, lintels, and posts and piles. When the specifier is used correctly, you can produce and print off your own Producer Statement (PS1), which is widely recognised through council.

Management saw this development as an important key tool to get Prolam’s laminated H3 and H5 product available into the market. Prior to the program being launched in 2014, most of our products would need to be specified by an engineer. This way, the professional can rely directly on Prolam’s specifier to produce a PS1 without needing to engage an engineer.

Tell me a little about how the program works?

After logging into the specifier, you input the job’s exact location in New Zealand and then select a specific item from a list of about 100 different items throughout the building. You then fill in the relevant information for the project you’re working on, such as loading and wind factors, hit calculate and the specifier will produce a list of available products from which you can select which product you feel best fits your situation.

The program will also give the performance of each item within that job, such as deflection, capacity ratio, long-term deflection, downward reaction and upward reaction, which relates directly to fixing details.

What are the benefits of using the Prolam Pro?

When a designer or architect uses the specifier at the same time as they are designing a building or house, they can easily see how much they can increase the parameters of what they’re trying to do, such as the size of the bedrooms or the height of the roof.

The professional can rely solely on the information they receive from the system without having to employ an engineer, which can be expensive. Prolam Pro is fast, it’s free and it’s easy to use and understand.

It must have involved many hours of testing to be able to offer the correct information…

Absolutely. We’ve employed a local engineer who’s literally put thousands of hours into developing the program and into running numerous test calculations to prove the reliability of the system. Although we still occasionally receive requests from council for the information in a calculation format so that they can check the calculator is working correctly, we’re currently in the middle of working on CodeMark certification for both the online specifier and the majority of our products, so that won’t be an issue soon.

 

Does Prolam Pro incorporate any particularly innovative features?

The whole program is innovative, especially as it comes from the private sector. There are other online calculators available, but they are offered through corporate bodies such as Carter Holt Harvey. One innovative element is around the fact that there is no need to purchase or download any modifications and updates, as the program is completely free and is automatically updated.

Prolam Pro also caters for a wide range of situations or variables within the building spectrum – it’ll cover situations such as snow loadings from 0 to 900m. It also has a variable point loading program included.

 

What plans do you have for the program? 

We have a future program which is alread written and is currently being rigorously tested before we make it live. It has a lot of extra exciting features, like beam calculations for sub-floor members and cantilevers. The new program will be released at some point this year.
