Ceramic Sculpture by Carol Robinson

New Zealand ceramicist Carol Robinson is known for angular, linear, and geometric clay forms that take reference from architecture and domestic environments. Robinson's current "Apartment" series playfully explores architectural forms that are simultaneously relateable and surreal.

From precarious houses that seem to stack indefinitely, to raised chairs that appear to bow and lean. The results are quirky and enchanting. Robinson allows the process of repetitious joining of clay slabs to guide the making of her work. As the artist adds forms to forms, the work seems to create itself. After the underlying form is created the piece is refined by adding subtle details, such as windows, doors, and handles. These sensitive touches create a narrative, a story, inviting the viewer to imagine what it would be like to inhabit these quirky environments.
