The YULPARITJA collection translates the work of five key artists from the Bidyadanga Indigenous art movement. Their work highlights their recent history by combining their desert heritage with their saltwater experience: desert iconography is portrayed in the rich blues, greens and reds of the coastal landscape. Designer Rugs is honoured to have been given the opportunity to interpret the work of these artists to create this vibrant collection of handknot rugs.

LUNGARUNG is based on artwork by Weaver Jack. This piece is named after her birthplace in the Great Sandy Desert. Weaver Jack was the boss of the Yulparija at Bidyadanga, She was an astute and intelligent woman, and a formidable painter. Her strength belied her small stature, and her work suggested incomprehensible things beyond the landscape. Weaver shatters the illusion and delusion of western landscape painting, as being a static frozen entity. In Weaver’s world it is layered and dense, full of movement and songs of family memory, clan stories, and epic mythologies.
