Off-grid street lighting for improved safety and energy efficiency

Off-grid street lighting is becoming an increasingly considered option for new housing developments, roadways and other public spaces, especially in rural or remote areas where it is expensive to lay cables for traditional powered lighting.LZ New Zealand has been at the forefront of developing off-grid public lighting systems and recently installed the first off-grid lighting system in New Zealand at an Avondale, Auckland subdivision.

This work saw LZ New Zealand named winners of the Energy Technology of the Year category at the Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards in 2017.

When the installation of a street light power feed was missed, the off-grid option was a viable solution. The hybrid system uses solar and winds power with energy stored in a battery to provide up to five days capacity. The system has few installation costs with the only preparation work being concrete foundations for the street light poles to be attached to.

Solar Flyhorse Street Light offers -

  • Range of colour temperatures
  • Offers a wide lighting scope so lamp posts can be spaced further apart
  • Can detect bad weather and adjust to work with lower sunlight levels
  • Offers remote monitoring which alerts when faults occur and monitor battery life
  • Requires little maintenance

A similar system helps to light Perry Bridge over the Waikato River on the national Te Awa Cycleway. A connection to the smart network ensures the lights come on at dusk to help cyclists.
