Brick is favoured for its character, warmth and texture and is widely used across residential and commercial projects. Brick is a particularly durable cladding material and can be used to create a very traditional style of the home right through to the most contemporary of houses.

Bricks have been used for centuries as a cladding material, for good reason. They are incredibly durable and will withstand extreme temperature fluctuations. Most bricks represent an affordable option and offer high thermal and acoustic properties.

Bricks also require little to no maintenance over their lifetime. They don’t need painting or sealing and they won’t rot, degrade or fade over time.

The inherent thermal mass of bricks means they will store heat and then slowly release it over time, which means a house will stay cooler during summer and warmer in winter. Combined with insulation, bricks offer a highly effective thermal cladding solution.

The main ingredient in bricks is clay, which is fired in the kiln at around 1,000 degrees Celsius and means bricks have a high fire rating and are unlikely to burn.

The other benefit of brick as a cladding material is the availability of a vast range of shapes, colours and sizes allowing for a high level of design flexibility.

Brick veneer

Brick veneer has grown in popularity recently as an alternative to brick cladding. It is non-structural and applied only for aesthetic purposes. Brick veneer is popular because it is often cheaper than brick, is quicker and easier to install and is much lighter than real brick. Like brick, brick veneer requires little maintenance, is durable and fire-resistant.

Both brick and brick veneer are favoured for their textural qualities and timeless appeal. Contemporary options for brick cladding are numerous and are not limited to traditional brick materials. Everything from glass to reclaimed materials is being used, often in wildly different compositional techniques that vary greatly from traditional masonry.
