Chimneys have been the topic of much discussion of late in the wake of changing seismic requirements - with many older chimneys classified as a risk in a seismic event. In many cases, these older chimneys have been removed and replaced with stronger, contemporary options that meet all relevant and current Building Code requirements.

What are the different types of chimneys?

There are various contemporary options for chimneys, most of which can be retrofitted to replace an older, unsafe chimney, or incorporated into new builds or modern houses and styled to suit the era of the building and the architectural style of the home. 

While most fireplaces require a chimney, there are now open fires that do not require the traditional chimney and flue as they don’t produce smoke, ash or soot. These are known as biofuel or bioethanol fires and can be installed in areas where a chimney is not possible to install, and in apartments and other high-density dwellings. 

However, all gas and wood fires require a chimney and flue, and the options are vast in terms of style, materiality and design.

From the very natural and traditional clay chimney to a ceramic chimney, a metal chimney or a stone chimney - a plethora of options exist, most of which can be custom made or completely bespoke pieces to suit individual tastes and requirements. 

Chimney cowls and cowlings are other areas of fireplace accessories where a vast number of options exist. A gas chimney cap, a wood fire chimney cap and any other style of fireplace and chimney, often require a cap either to meet regulations or aesthetic aspirations, with a vast range of styles and materials available. 

Generally, the chimney cowl or cap is the highest point of the home so it’s a nice place to create an individual statement and tie the chimney in with the rest of the exterior design. Often, a chimney cap is chosen that contrasts in colour and materiality from the main chimney, creating a defining juxtaposition at the highest point of the home.
