Introducing the permeable HydroPaver from JAGAS that is both porous and suitable for vehicle loadings. JAGAS Hydropavers are of an advanced ceramic construction that combines high strength, high porosity and excellent water retention.  They carry PASS certification for acceptability by Local Authorities.

So called “permeable” paving products, such as those made from standard dry-cast concrete, rely on the gaps between the pavers to allow water to pass – and rely entirely (but not always successfully) on the supporting layers to retain water. The gaps can clog, completely negating the permeability of the paving installation.  No such problem with Hydropavers, making them very attractive to our high-profile customers.

Hydropavers have excellent Green properties, both in their behaviour in the environment (see below) and by being manufactured from recycled porcelain.

Features & Benefits

Water Retention

JAGAS Hydropavers will hold the first 11mm of rainfall inside the void spaces in the paver (20% of volume). This works out to be 3.9L/ m2 of floor area. After the rain stops, this water will transpire back into the atmosphere. If that’s not enough retention capability, after the pavers retention space is filled, the water will pass into the specially designed base at a rate of 3mm/min. This also acts as a retention space that can be customised to the specific project.

Auckland averages 3.5mm rainfall/day and 60mm on a bad Day! These pavers have 0 run off!

Site Coverage

According to the Auckland Unitary plan, a maximum of 60% of your site coverage can be impermeable (site type dependent). This includes roofs, paved or impervious compacted areas such as patios, driveways and parking areas. Jagas Hydropaver system is Codemark Certified and therefore must be accepted as a truly permeable surface by the council. It also meets the 10mm retention requirement meaning that your permeable surface and retention device can be an all in one solution.

See below quote from the Auckland Council Unitary Plan:

“The 95th percentile detention requirement and the 10 mm retention requirement can be provided in one single device; any storage volume provided to meet the 10 mm retention requirement can also be used to meet the 95th percentile detention requirement. Devices that can meet retention and detention requirements include raintanks (where the water is re‐used), permeable pavement, raingardens, gravel trenches and infiltration basins.”

Heat Island Effect

With the increase in global warming, the heat island effect demands ever-increasing attention. Have you ever sat under an umbrella in a café and felt like you are in a sauna with the heat radiating off the concrete paving all around you? How about tried walking on pavers/concrete surfaces in bare feet?

Hydropavers are noticeably better at reducing heat absorbed than traditional paving due to the ceramic material. They are also very comfortable to walk on without shoes! Hydropavers help combat the effects of global warming in our urban jungles!

See the image below showing a -10°C difference between the surrounding concrete and black Hydropaver.

Slip Resistance

Due to the fact the Hydropavers pass water through faster than it rains here in NZ, there is no surface puddling in heavy rain. Results from Opus tests also indicate a coefficient of friction of 0.65 when wet. This means you can have peace of mind knowing that risk has been reduced of slippage in wet conditions.

Low Maintenance

Traditional paving needs re-sealing every 3-6 years depending on the sealer and the traffic on the paving. Even when the paving is sealed it is still possible to get permanent/difficult to remove stains on them that requires in depth (and expensive) maintenance. This is all extra cost that doesn’t appear at first when quoting a paving job but still must be considered!

Hydropavers do not need to be sealed and will not permanently clog with debris. All you need to do is give them a hose down/ scrub or light water blast and all silt, sand and dirt will be cleared. The colour is also baked into the ceramic paver and will not fade with time in harsh New Zealand conditions.

This product was picked up by Auckland Transport in Waiuku Town Centre for this very reason.
