The bedroom is a part of the home that invites a relaxing and calming aesthetic; often, the most successful bedroom designs incorporate a range of textures and a softer palette of hues to attain this. With contemporary furnishings and colours, sleek design ideas promote tranquillity and style - with bedroom furniture a central part of this.

Bed Frames & Bedside Tables

Beds and bedside tables generally form the centre of the bedroom, so these are often the best places to start when designing a bedroom. While the initial allure of beds may be purely based in comfort and cosiness, finding a balance between this and a refined style can be difficult. So, it pays to consider the architectural style of the room and wider home, as well as the design scheme in the rest of the house when choosing a bed. Bedside tables work in harmony with the bed, balancing the larger piece of furniture with their smaller scale.

The size of the bed is important - and will depend on the scale of the room - with a super king frame for example working only in larger spaces. Too large and a bed frame may make the room feel cramped while too small and the opposite may be the case, so it’s worth carefully considering the size of the bed - and whether it’s right for the room. A single bed frame, a double bed frame, a queen bed frame - make sure those measurements are correct to instill a sense of balance and calm in the room.

Headboards are a great way to inject a real sense of character into the room, with a range of materials, colours, sizes and textures available - from standard to designer and bespoke - and covering a wide material palette from wood to cane, iron, velvet and much more.

Versatile space-saving beds: loft beds and sofa beds

If a bedroom is being designed as a spare room, there is often scope to introduce a sofa bed that can be folded out only as necessary, rendering the space useful not only as a bedroom.

Where space is at a premium, loft beds are a sought-after option for kids’ room, often allowing for the use of a home office desk or storage under the bed. Often, storage is incorporated in space-saving beds, with kids’ bedside tables and drawers part of the one piece of furniture.

Bedroom furniture sets are also common, with designer sets often available to be customised to fit a certain space, or with a choice of materials or finishes.

Installing bedroom dividers can be an excellent way to partition a room, creating two distinct areas and maximizing the available space.

Bedroom storage

Whether it’s a small room or large, the options for clever bedroom storage are vast. Perhaps it’s a customised built-in walk-in wardrobe, bespoke wardrobe systems or wardrobe organisers, or maybe it’s a freestanding wardrobe, or a simple chest of drawers and a dressing table - the decision will depend on the style of the room, the space available, and the amount and style of storage required.
