The most common type of stool is a simple, backless stool. Typically round in shape, backless stools are great for smaller spaces where they can be stored discreetly under a benchtop. Backless stools are generally sought after for ease of use and storage but are not always the most practical option for children or for comfort.

When comfort is at the forefront of any design decisions, choosing stools with arms is generally the best option. Stools with arms are a preferred option in settings where people may be seated in them for longer periods, such as for full meals or to work. Generally, Counter tools with arms take up more space and cannot be stored under a countertop. Safety is a key consideration. A slip-proof stepping surface, such as grip dot textured surfaces, will ensure a firm foothold and prevent slipping and sliding. It is also important that the stool itself maintains a firm grip on the floor surface without damaging it – look for non-marring foot pads to protect the user and the floor. For a small child needing access to the kitchen bench, maybe consider a toddler kitchen helper step stool – these have side railings for added safety, and come in a range of designs, from simple and white to blend in seamlessly, to themed units for the child’s enjoyment.

While steel and aluminium step stools are generally more popular, there are other options worth considering. A wooden step stool, while bulkier and often heavier, is incredibly stable – and can be a much more inviting addition aesthetically. Pop a plant or vase on it when not in use, and it will assume the role of an extra-low table – or even an occasional seat. The character wooden stools provide can not be replicated in plastic or steel – so if it is going to be always lurking around the living spaces it is well worth considering wood.

Collapsible, folding step stools come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and materials. From wooden to aluminium to plastic, light-weight to the more robust, folding step stools offer the benefit of being hidden out of sight and whipped out when required. A one-step folding plastic stool may suffice if it is only a small boost that is required, but a three-step option will ensure access to almost all of those out of reach places.
