If this is your first major building project or renovation in Auckland, you might be a little unsure about how to start and develop a conversation with experienced professionals. More often than not, they’ll be able to lead you through the most crucial and relevant aspects involved but it helps to have a basic understanding of the issues and challenges that need to be addressed.

Some of the most important things to ask and discuss include:

• Their rates/fees, your budget and payment schedules
• Availability and expected timeline for the project
• Their experience on similar projects
• What stands their service/products apart
• The licenses they have for such work in Auckland
• Advice on building permits or otherwise that are required in Auckland
• The insurance policies they have and what they cover
• How they’ll manage or oversee a project
• Use of sub-contractors and their credentials
• Their accessibility to you for communication throughout the project
• Warranties for products, work and services carried out in Auckland
• Challenges they foresee in the project
• Any areas of opportunity, stylistic or practical, that have been missed
• Why you should ultimately choose them

These questions will be more relevant to some contractors and professionals than others but it covers enough common ground within the industry to give you a solid foundation for a successful working relationship.
