Award-winning Eco Home banner

Craft Homes, a leading builder of sustainable and energy-efficient homes in New Zealand, has recently completed a high-performance eco home that has been awarded a Regional Silver Award in the 2022 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. The home, which was built using Formance Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) and other high-performance building materials, is also on track to achieve a Homestar 8 rating, one of the highest level of sustainability and energy efficiency in the Homestar rating system.

Energy-efficiency in mind right from the start...

The project began with a thorough performance modeling process prior to construction, which allowed the team at Craft Homes to optimize the design and materials selection for the highest level of energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The use of Formance SIPs panels for the walls and roof provided a super airtight thermal envelope and insulation values well above code requirements. The walls were also finished with Pro Clima smart membranes, which help to prevent air leakage and improve indoor air quality.

The windows were also a key component of the home's energy efficiency, with German-made high-performance windows being used throughout the home. These windows, along with the other building materials and techniques used, helped to reduce energy consumption and improve the overall thermal comfort of the home.

The results of the project speak for themselves, with the home achieving a Regional Silver Award in the 2022 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, and on track to achieve a Homestar 8 rating. This is a testament to the skill and dedication of the Craft Homes team and their use of high-performance building materials, such as Formance SIPs, Pro Clima smart membranes, and German-made windows.

Comfortable, efficient and healthier living

This project is a shining example of how high-performance building materials and techniques can be used to create homes that are not only energy-efficient and sustainable, but also beautiful and comfortable to live in. It also demonstrates the importance of considering energy performance during the design process and how it can lead to a more efficient, healthier, and comfortable home.

About the
Professional

It’s no secret many New Zealanders live in cold, damp homes. Mould, leaks, and draughts damage health, and 1,600 New Zealanders die every year as a direct result of living in unhealthy, poorly insulated homes. And sadly, it’s not only old houses that cause problems. The reality is that new homes built to current building code are also inadequate because New Zealand’s building standards lag far behind the rest of the developed world.

Traditional methods of construction have cold thermal bridges in the building envelope through their timber framing, and for insulation they only just meet the minimum requirements. They’re also heavily reliant on the installer doing it right and as they slump over time they lose their effectiveness.

Formance Structural Insulated Panels, or SIPs are a high-performing building material for the ultimate energy efficient home. Replacing the timber framing building envelope with Formance panels provides continuous insulation with near zero air leakage, creating a consistently warmer, drier and healthier indoor environment for the long term.

If you’re the kind of person who loves wearing shorts and a t-shirt around home regardless of the season then take a look at upgrading your building envelope to Formance. You will kiss goodbye to high power bills and enjoy four seasons of summer every year.
